Matthew Olosunde’s time with Manchester United has come to an end.
The club announced on Friday that Olosunde was one of 14 players released.
The 21-year-old right back failed to make a senior appearance for the Red Devils after he joined Manchester United in 2017 from the New York Red Bulls.
He is coming off five appearances for Manchester United’s U-23 side this season where he made 35 appearances through United’s youth ranks since joining the club, registering two assists.
Internationally, he’s earned one cap with the U.S. Men’s National Team after 33 combined appearances between the U-17’s and U-20’s.
His lone senior cap came in May 2018 in the USMNT’s 3-0 friendly win over Bolivia.
I hope our young players begin to leverage opportunities with smaller, development-heavy clubs abroad that are known to give young foreign players opportunities. Places like Manchester United, Chelsea, Man City, etc. do end up with the odd outsider coming into the system and then emerging as a senior team player, but those are exceptions to the rule that at these clubs, huge investment in already shining world class talent is how they compete for trophies – not by grabbing young players from America, Canada, Mexico, Brazil or wherever and putting them into their youth teams to develop. I hope Matthew finds a club and is able to flourish abroad, but I hope players in the position he was with NYRB now look to places where he is going to be given time and investment to grow into a player of the future, like Sargent is getting, Adams, Mckennie, Pulisic, etc.
I have to disagree with you on EPL and La Liga teams stay snatching young talent from the Brazilian league. Neymar,Vincius, etc list goes on.
they may snatch them up but when they arrive they toil in the reserves for years, and get loaned out several times because of the emphasis on those clubs needing to win now!
No they make the first team bench. I can think of several young Brazilians including Neymar and Vincius, twins Fabio and Rafael who went straight to La Liga and EPL and made the first team bench. I remeber one of the twins Rafael struggled a little at Man U. Heck Neymar was starting when he arrived at Barcelona.
Mysterious, Neymar came up through Santos and the twins Fluminense. There are a surplus of academy players all over Europe and few of them actually play for their senior club.
Coming up through a big academy looks great on a resume but doesn’t transfer to a successful productive career. You see big club academy players sprinkled throughout MLS and few feature as starting eleven contributors. Kenny Cooper made a career hanging on coming up brought ManU academy and he was a constant under performing player. I remember a player Franck Song’o brought into the Timbers from the Barca academy. He looked like a player with a ton of skill and super athletic in warmups. His skill never transferred to contributing to the team.
Between the ages of 18 and 23 is when a professional career is established and at what level you will perform the rest of your career
Look at Gabriel Jesus. Went to Manchester City at 20 21 and made Manchester City first team bench as soon as he arrived from Palmeirs.
GJ was 19 playing for Man City as soon as he arrived came on as a sub in Jan 2017 at 19. He still could have been pushed to their u 21s but imnediately started. thanks for the Kenny Cooper example TwoMileRule. I do remeber him coming through Man U too
