Reports: Besiktas agree to deal for Tyler Boyd

Tyler Boyd is reportedly on his way to Turkish giant Besiktas.

According to multiple reports out of Turkey, Besiktas has agreed to terms with Boyd’s current club, Portuguese outfit Vitoria de Guimaraes. Besiktas will figure pay Vitoria €2 million which will be paid in installments by the end of 2019. Boyd is expected to join the club in training camp next week in Riva.

Boyd spent the second-half of the 2018-19 season in Turkey with Ankaragucu, scoring six goals and adding four assists in 14 appearances. His arrival helped spark the club to a 13th-place finish, three points clear of the relegation zone.

He made a one-time switch to the U.S. from New Zealand back in May and registered a two-goal performance in the USMNT’s 4-0 Gold Cup win over Guyana. Boyd totaled 234 minutes of action in the Gold Cup over four appearances as the USMNT finished as runners-up to Mexico.

Boyd made his debut for Vitoria back in in 2015, but only totaled 10 appearances since. He’s also appeared for Tondela, Wellington Phoenix, and Waikato FC.

Besiktas finished third in the Super Lig last campaign, qualifying for the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League group stage.

  1. To those asking why didn’t he play in the final, he didn’t play in the semi either. He was yanked 70′ into Curacao never to play another tournament minute. GB then settled into a rotation of Morris and Roldan. Roldan until then had played mid. I don’t think this has anything to do with him signing. I took it as a doghouse move. Someone more enterprising than I could go back and watch Curacao tape and see what happened, eg, did he not track his man back. Thought it was bush league because we needed offense and down 0-1 a coach has to be willing to take any risk, and a player with 2 goals that tournament who p*ssed you off in another game is not that risky. What’s the worst that happens, we lose 0-2? If he thinks Roldan is a RF he is a joke.

    • I believe it has to do with his deal. Slight injury doesn’t want it to become major before he has to join new squad. If he’s not called in this fall it signals GGG didn’t find him coachable.

      • I kinda doubt it’s the uncoachable thing. Wish I remember where but… I read an interview late in the GC where Berhalter spoke pretty glowingly on how Boyd immediately produced on the field and fit in well within the locker room.

      • Grain of salt on GB’s glowing remarks on players. He cut Sargent while describing him as the future striker of the team. At the same time Soto was looking excellent. I take GB to be some parts oblivious and glib.
