SBI USMNT Man of the Match: Weston McKennie

Weston McKennie was a live wire for the U.S. Men’s National Team on Wednesday, helping it book a place back in the Concacaf Gold Cup Final.

McKennie scored the first goal before assisting on the USMNT’s eventual winning goal in a 3-1 semifinal win over Jamaica. His performance earned him Man of the Match honors.

McKennie netted his second goal of the Gold Cup, slicing through the middle of the Jamaican backline and roofing a shot past Andre Blake. It was a clever run from the Schalke man who made zero mistake in front of goal.

The 20-year-old’s beautifully placed pass for Jordan Morris set up the USMNT’s second goal. Morris’ shot was saved by Blake but Christian Pulisic would follow up with a rebound goal.

McKennie continued to track a lot of ground for the USMNT on the evening, dealing with Jamaica’s talented midfield.

The USMNT added a third goal late in the match to preserve the win.

McKennie beat out Pulisic and Michael Bradley for MOTM honors.

What did you think of McKennie’s performance? Do you think this was his best showing yet in the Gold Cup? What more do you hope to see out of him?

    • That’s because Mckennie was heavily involved in defending against the Jamaican’s attacks wave after wave.

  1. I think he deserves MOM, however;
    McKennie did well most of the game, but he did give the ball away 3 times in dangerous positions when the US was transitioning from defense to attack. A better team would have capitalized on one of those errors.
    I suppose it is part of being 20 yo, but he cannot do that against better teams. His energy is unquestionable, his skill is great, but his decision making about when to take risks may need some work.
    Of course without him the US would have had a much tougher time and his goal was great.

  2. Really stoked to see this. He’d definitely had some bright moments in previous games this tournament, but has also looked out of sync, hesitant and uncharacteristically sloppy at times. Have chalked it up to normal adjustment to new coach/system/team mates- hopefully it’s coming together at just the right time..

  3. I agreed but i believe that Pulisic has a good game. The US defence on the left side sucks big time, i don’t know what the hell this guy Ream is doing there.

  4. Was ready to argue against Pulisic and for McKennie but Larry you made the right choice. His passing tonight was tremendous.
