U.S. U-17 product Giovanni Reyna joins Borussia Dortmund

Giovanni Reyna is the latest American to make the move to Germany.

Borussia Dortmund announced on Monday that Reyna has joined the club’s U-19 side. The 16-year-old is the son of former USMNT player and current NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna.

He will join the club as a free transfer from NYCFC’s academy, pending FIFA’s approval.

Reyna has made eight appearances for the U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team, scoring one goal. He was followed to Dortmund by Swiss 16-year-old Bradley Fink who comes from Swiss side FC Luzern.

Dortmund recently said goodbye to USMNT playmaker Christian Pulisic who is officially on his way to Chelsea later this summer.

Reyna follows in the footsteps of several American youth-based players including the likes of Ulysses Llanez, Alex Mendez, Chris Richards, Taylor Booth, and Michael Edwards.

  1. I have always held that parents are the coaches of their children in their formative years and that as the US population grows in its collective soccer experience that US players would improve. Young players are generally better than their parents ever were and their parents are better than their parents were. Cases in point Michael/Bob Bradley, Christian/Mark Puliisic, Emerson/Schellas Hyndman, Ian/John Harkes and, at a lower level, literally dozens of kids I’ve coached including my sons and me. I expect the great leaps and bounds US soccer has seen in the last 40 years will slow as players like Gio or Tim Weah may struggle to surpass the high bar their fathers set in soccer.

However, the very large pool of better players will help raise the level of even the most talented players.

  2. Busio, Soto, Yow, Konrad, w/ Gio, & 4 other players from this year’s U20s eligible for 2021. (Whoa!). Question is no longer about talent, but who’s going to coach them.
