USMNT to face Mexico in September friendly at Metlife Stadium

Concacaf’s biggest rivalry will be played out once again this Fall.

U.S. Soccer confirmed on Monday that the U.S. Men’s National Team will face Mexico in a friendly on Sept. 6th at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

It will be the first meeting between the two sides since the recent Concacaf Gold Cup Final, in which El Tri ran out 1-0 winners. Overall, it will be the 70th all-time meeting between the two rivals.

Since the turn of the century, the USMNT have posted a 14-7-6 record against Mexico, beating them 1-0 in Sept. 2018 thanks to a Tyler Adams game-winning goal.

The meeting comes just before the start of the inaugural Concacaf Nations League. The USMNT will face Cuba five days later on home soil, while El Tri takes on Bermuda away from home on the same day.

Kickoff is slated for 8:30 p.m. EST and the match will be broadcasted on Fox Sports 1, Univision, and TUDN.

  1. These friendlies mean something now as they do accumulate points for the FIFA rankings which rank teams for WCQ.

    • Not really it’s virtually impossible for either team to drop that far before the Hex. Probably is impossible but I don’t want to do the math.

  3. This just looks like a money grab, except the game is in NYC instead of North Mexico City (LA). This is starting to get a bit dull. Was no one else really available?

  4. I’ve heard Uruguay rumored for the other friendly…highly likely it’ll be a CONMEBOL opponent since everyone else is busy that window. Hopefully, we can have something close to the full squad for a change (though I doubt it).

  5. Since international soccer is doing away with friendlies, the more we play them the better I guess. They will be the best team we can play until the World Cup.

    • yep, these League of Nations (Concacaf and UEFA) are killing our chances to play good competition. At least we know that friendlies against Mexico will have plenty of intensity. The game against Cuba in October, not so much…

…and we might just beat Mexico in that game because we seem to win/tie in the friendlies and they seem to win IN ACTUAL competition / tournaments when it ACTALLY MATTERS…..got to love it…lol
