USMNT to face Uruguay in St. Louis for second September friendly

The U.S. Men’s National Team will face one of FIFA’s top ranked sides in its final tuneup before the start of the 2019 Concacaf Nations League.

U.S. Soccer announced on Thursday that the USMNT will host Uruguay at St. Louis’ Busch Stadium on Sept. 10th. Uruguay is currently ranked fifth in FIFA’s mens rankings and will provide Gregg Berhalter’s side with a tough test before the Nations League begins.

“We look forward to this challenge against an excellent Uruguayan team. They possess a mixture of top-level offensive difference makers and experienced defenders that have competed on the world stage for years,” Berhalter said.

“Part of the development of our team is being able to consistently compete against teams with the profile of Uruguay. In the National Team we also speak about the importance of tradition, and St. Louis has one of the great soccer legacies in the United States. We look forward to adding to that history in September.”

It will be the seventh all-time meeting between the two teams after last meeting at RFK Stadium in 2002. The USMNT hold a 2-2-2 record against Uruguay, who are currently led by star forwards Edinson Cavani (PSG) and Luis Suarez (Barcelona).

Busch Stadium will play host to the USMNT for only the second time in its history. The lone match before ended in a 6-1 victory for the U.S. over St. Vincent & the Grenadines back in a 2015 World Cup Qualifying match.

This fixture comes four days after the USMNT faces Concacaf rivals Mexico in East Rutherford, N.J.

  1. I think we can safely pencil Tim Ream onto the roster for a match in his hometown. Hopefully Sargent gets his chance before the hometown crowd as well. Feel like I’m missing some other St. Louis area players, doubt Twellman and McBride come out of retirement. Kind of funny Wikipedia had this match scheduled weeks ago.

    • I’m not sure I agree that we’ll call up players because of home town ties. This is a great opportunity to get a feel for younger, newer faces. The need to get younger and expand the depth chart on the senior team is real. It has been my contention that Greg relied on many of the players from the GC because of quick it came around after his hiring, and he needed players he could rely on to absorb his tactics and style of play quickly. However, now is the time to start integrating more youth and different established players.

      • US soccer had Ream do a video they released today so I don’t see them not inviting him and would assume Sargent is likely for friendlies as well. I think GGG will invite 5-8 new guys but not anything wholesale.

      • you confuse repeatedly what USSF does with them making wise decisions. Ream is an iffy choice but even if you like him he will be 34 when Qatar comes. are you sure there are no 40 year olds we could start?

      • Rt: I think he knew he was going to be coach for months before the end of 2018. I then note that he has had months into 2019 to identify players. I am more inclined, based on review of game logs, to think that he has simply arrived at a close approximation of his goal, which he will tweak around the edges. I see this as represented by how Mihailovic and Roldan struggled to feed Sargent during Jamaica, but the first two — who are now regulars — made the team, and Sargent didn’t. to me that reflects someone with particular ideas. and that’s why game on the line against Mexico he sends in Roldan as a wing forward. and then subs in a LB. sick or not he believes in precisely what he is doing and who with.

    • IV: didn’t mean to give any support of it just stating it seems likely Ream will be there given they’re using him to promote it. Holmes, Lletget, and Adams all carrying injuries forced the inclusion of Mijailovich and likely Roldan so I hardly see that as any sort of set lineup.

      • the list of people who would select Roldan as a wing forward, injuries or not, is not much higher than one. and there were a bunch of gall/ green/weah etc. healthy mids who were left home so roldan and mihailovic would make it, which means it is not about injuries. this boils down to the coach seeing a player with no NT goals as the functional equivalent of Pulisic or Arriola, which he pretty demonstrably is not. and when we need a goal against Mexico this got underlined. the idea that adams affects these two is rubbish. he had bradley and trapp already on the team — good or ill — so how many redundant hustling mids do you need.

      • Well it’s two because he’s played there for Seattle. One there were rumors Boyd had an injury and two when Roldan seemed to signal a formation change to play a 4-5-1 as he ran on. The squad inability to make that adjustment does fall partially on 3G. 10 minutes later we were down a goal and Roldan had to move higher. The Lovitz move should reassure you that Mihailovic is not a favored son.
