Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Gooch, De La Torre, and more

Sunderland was one of three sides who eliminated Premier League opposition in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Lynden Gooch put in a strong performance for the Black Cats, who rolled off a 3-1 road win at Burnley. The 23-year-old recorded one shot on goal, while finishing the match with 15 competed passes. Defensively, he won nine of 19 duels against several of Burnley’s first team squad. Gooch has continued to grab minutes for Jack Ross’ side and now the Black Cats have a date with Sheffield United in the next round of the League Cup. Before then, Gooch will look to score in Sunderland’s League One date with Peterborough on Saturday.

  1. Why is Alvarado being ignored? He at least should have been bought in for the first game. More bad player selection. Even though Carter VIckers has not been impressive he should have been given a chance over Lovitz and Lima. Gall should have been called up. Horvath over Brad Butterfingers Guzan! Green should be called up over Christian Roldan and Jackson Yueill ! Man this guys player selection is awful!

    • I wouldn’t have a problem with any of those players except you want them to replace guys that play different positions with the exception of Horvath and Guzan of course. Hopefully Horvath moves in the next couple days which is way he was left off.

      • Bro you had Mckennie playing Forward, Midfield, and Center Back for Schalke. Carter Vickers could play RB, Alvorado is a CB. Gall can play Christian Roldan role. Stop with the lets put players in one position and limit them, do you know that versatility is what makes players valuable.???

      • FJ should be called in way beofre Lovitz or Lima. Chandler warming the bench is better than Lovitz and Lima Lima is not that good to me. Cannon is way better than Lima and more aggressive.

      • There is no way CCV could play RB in a back four. Gall is not an 8 if you think Roldan is going to continue to sub in for Morris/Boyd sure. With Cannon, Ream, and Dest I’m not sure we have to worry about a Lovitz and Lima playing a lot. The interesting one to me that no one is talking about is why Corey Baird?

    • While we don’t have as many players in Mexico as before, it seems almost as if Berhalter ignores anyone in Mexico. At least Klinsmann didn’t restrict where he drew players from. Alvarado has been a starter for most of the last 2 years. I can’t believe he is not as good as some of these MLS youngsters who have a total pro experience of maybe two years. As I have written before, Green absolutely should be called in; he’s earned it.

      • Not many others left Gonzo, Corona, Arriola, Villa, and Garza are all back. Yarborough doesn’t play beyond cup matches anymore. Rubio is in the 2nd division. I honestly haven’t seen Alvarado play in 4 years, and we’re pretty deep at CB so that would be my guess.

      • Juarez and Arce also too I thought Guido played in Mexico too. All three Mexican Americans. He gives them no looks. Yarbrough os better than Guzan. I mentioned Baird should not be there. When the roster was dropped.

      • Guido is actually at LAFC but hasn’t dressed all season muscle injury of some sort. Arce has 25 Liga Mx minutes and Suarez has played like 250 minutes in Liga Mx, as LW he has 1500 minutes in all competitions and levels and has 1 goal and 1 assist. Not saying they’ll never be but none have a resume that deserves a call up or even a check in phone call.
