Joe Gyau is coming to Major League Soccer.

FC Cincinnati announced they’ve acquired Gyau prior to the closure of the Secondary Transfer Window. Gyau comes to FC Cincy from German third-tier side MSV Duisburg.

“We are delighted to welcome Joe to FC Cincinnati,” FC Cincinnati General Manager Gerard Nijkamp said. “We feel his ability and pace are a good fit for our style of play and he will provide another attacking option on our roster.”

Gyau has totaled 172 combined appearances throughout his time in Germany, scoring 21 goals and adding 13 assists. He’s appeared for Borussia Dortmund, Hoffenheim, SG Sonnenhof Grobaspach, St. Pauli, and Duisburg.

He’s also won three caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team since 2014. His last appearance came this past June in a 1-0 friendly loss to Jamaica.

FC Cincy are bottom of the Eastern Conference and next face the Columbus Crew on Saturday.

  1. Wow this is fantastic news for fans and US soccer. Can’t wait to see him in action, looking forward to Gyau AND MANNEH PLAYING. But like I always say MLS, even though is not a top league, can make or break your career. Just ask T. Boyd…..smh

    • Also, FC Cincinnati continued their activity with the acquisition of Derrick Etienne Jr. on loan from the New York Red Bulls……looks like coach Ron Jans and the organization are serious about building the team. With Stanko and Cruz already on board……..hmmmm

    • I’d say tearing his ACL 5 years ago was Terrence Boyd’s career breaker not his failed stint at TFC. He did have an assist in his first match with Hallescher last week.

  2. I do hope he reboots his career but for every Pulisic yanks abroad story there is usually this Gyau/Renken stuff where it doesn’t turn out so well. the constant “take the money” refrain actually sounds like the opposite of what a matured Freddy Adu would now suggest.

    • What would you suggest then? Stay with MLS?
Very few MLS clubs invest in an academy AND promote to the big club. FC Dallas and (used to be) NYRB are the ones that come to mind
Plus some of these clubs won’t sell to Europe (DC United and NYRB)
Each player is different but if the player can find an club that is known for developing players and giving them a shot at the first team, they should do it.
Also, don’t think Gyau ever got big money as he never really broke into a first team with a club

      • Saying that everyone doesn’t need to sign EPL or B.1 does not equal sign MLS. I like the current influx of players into Holland. I think we need a more calibrated approach to where we sign and less of imitating Freddy Adu’s mistake of signing with the biggest brand name interested waving the most money. We make fun of Freddy but then tout the next guy signing at Spurs or City or PSG or whatnot who never (or hardly) plays there. How is that dramatically different than Freddy?

      • yeah was about to echo this same sentiment…..injuries definitely halted Gyau’s development, which is a shame because he had a lot of talent and speed!

    • Gyau’s original injury came during a NT match in Connecticut. He was looking to break in with Dortmund prior to that having made his first appearance in the weeks before tearing his meniscus with the US. He came back a few months after surgery and blew out the same knee and missed almost two years time to recovery.
