Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Dest, McKennie, and more

Sergino Dest and Ajax will look to remain atop of the Eredivisie table this weekend as they welcome their biggest rivals to town.

Ajax welcomes PSV to town in one of Europe’s top showdowns this weekend with Dest seeking another start for Erik ten Hag’s side. The 19-year-old Dest made his Champions League group stage debut midweek for Ajax in a 3-0 home victory over Lille. Dest has continued to win first-team minutes for the defending Dutch champs, but will face his toughest competition yet this weekend in the form of last season’s runners-up.

Elsewhere, Weston McKennie and Schalke entertain Mainz in Bundesliga action while Timothy Chandler will seek a second consecutive league start for Eintracht Frankfurt. Christian Pulisic and Chelsea take on Liverpool in a highly-contested EPL showdown. Jonathan Amon will seek a start for Nordsjaelland in Danish Superliga play, Theoson-Jordan Siebatcheu and Rennes face Lille, and Ventura Alvarado and Necaxa face Club Leon at home.

  1. I’ve been thinking how Pulisic can get more fist team minutes at Chelsea. He actually played quite well the past few games for Chelsea right before the recent international break and right before Willian recovered back to 100% fitness. Pulisic may not have showed as much aggressiveness and desire to score goals as Mason Mount, Pedro and Willian who have been ahead of Pulisic on the pecking order according to Frank Lampard’s likings, but not even a single minute in 2 games for a talented young player Chelsea was willing to have paid $68M Pounds for his services? How can Pulisic get at least some first team minutes? Should he be more selfish and look for more opportunities to take a shot at goal to score like Mason Mount. Has Pulisic been too contented or comfortable to create opportunities and assists for other teammates instead of scoring for himself? Should he pay more attention and study films on his movements off the ball and hover inside the box (like a high scoring Raheem Sterling) more to have a higher chance to score, since Azpilicueta always overlaps on the right side of the pitch? I’m extremely frustrated and concerned about Pulisic’s situations. What do the USMNT fans think on how Pulisic can improve his first team minutes?

    • I wondered when this would start. Pulisic finds himself in a tough position. Lots of competition for places. Pulisic is one of 4 players on Chelsea shorter than 5’9” – the others are Pedro, William, and Kanye. I.e. he doesn’t fit the Chelsea mold.

He has an inexperienced manager. With a game against Liverpool on the weekend, why didn’t he play in the mid-week euro game to rotate the squad? Lampard is going to burn out his 6 foot plus youngsters

      Reply
      • Lampard has already burned 2 subs on injured defenders in the first half. The next sub for offense will probably be Pedro or Giroud. Pulisic may get 0 minutes again 3 games in a row.

      • It’s official. Lampard really has a problem with Pulisic. Zero minutes 3 games in a row, for a talented young player Chelsea spent 68M Pounds on. Not starting, fine, but Pulisic is not worth a single minute in 3 consecutive games? I really question this genius decision by Lampard. As slow and over the hill as Lampard was when he played for NYCFC, Patrick Vieri still gave Lampard some minutes due only to his experience. Lampard’s favorite boy, Mason Mount absolutely wasted a golden chance to tie up the game late by skying the ball up close inside the box. I hope Abrahimovic is very happy with the progress and results with Frank Lampard.

  2. Niko Hämäläinen should also be added I know he keeps going back between Finland and USA but Beerholder should def call him in. I do not know if he plays wing back or center back.

  3. We have 4 Americans at Don Deedson Louicius, Emmanuel Sabbi, Yosef Samuel, and Christian Cappis and none of them can get a call up smh. Call up Emmanuel Sabbi when Don Deedson Louicius starts getting first team minutes with Hobro call him up.

Reyna also needs to be fast tracked to the senior national team and club team.
I believe he will be better than Pulisic in three years(My opinion, don’t come for me and attack me!).

    • The Danish League is at best equal to MLS. Deedson and Samuel struggled for time in USL they’re a long ways from NT (I’ve read conflicting opinions if Deedson is even eligible). Cappis and Sabbi have opportunities with the YT to show their worth first.
