Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Alvarado, Sabbi, and more

Liga MX side Necaxa continued on Sunday after a 2-0 road win over Monterrey.

American centerback Ventura Alvarado helped post the clean sheet, while putting in a strong shift in the backline. Alvarado finished with an 85% passing completion rate, while also winning eight of his 11 individual duels. The veteran also made one successful tackle, won one foul, and made seven clearances in his team’s fourth league win in the past five matches.

Alvarado and Necaxa are next in action on Sept. 21st against Club Leon.

Elsewhere, Emmanuel Sabbi scored the game-winning goal for Hobro in a upset win over FC Kobenhaven. Lynden Gooch scored a goal for Sunderland in a road league win, while Matthew Olosunde assisted once in Rotherham United’s lopsided win. Rubio Rubin helped Dorados earn a tie on the road in league play, Eric Lichaj and Antonee Robinson went head-to-head in league play, and Jonathan Klinsmann was sent off in St. Gallen’s Swiss Cup defeat.

  1. Impressive, 82 players listed, nearly double the number from 4 years ago; I think I remember not so long ago when the list was closer to 10. I suppose some of that is due to better reporting, but …

  2. Jong Ajax played Jong PSV and won 2-0. Gloster and Ledezma went 90 minutes each for PSV, Mendez 68 mins for Ajax and Pynadath 18 mins off the bench (his first minutes for the 2nd Division squad).

  3. I’m not trying to laugh at ArJo, but I mean at this point when do you just call it a career? 11 minutes into the game and injured again? Dude there’s no doubt you’re a very very good footballer, but if you can’t stay healthy for more than 4 days at a time just call it.

If you’re able to keep making millions by never playing then kudos to your agent, but this isn’t fair to yourself, the clubs you play for, and the fans.

  4. Continued to see top league players and national teams during Euro qualifications that teams trying to play out from the back committed ugly mistakes that yielded silly goals over & over again. Today it was City’s central defender, Nicolás Otamendi and Arsenal’s Sokratis’ turn to screw up building from the back. Nowadays, teams always try to play out from the back; however, defensive coaches have also come out with compact and effective high press to cause turnover at the opponent’s final third. Maybe we were frustrated that the USMNT committed mistakes and lost to El Tri again and being a bit too harsh on our players.

  5. Anyone actually seen Necaxa play this season I understand their in first place but is Alvarado playing well? Gonzo and Villafana played on good teams in Liga Mx and it didn’t translate to great national team moments.

    • Yes Alvarado has been playing well he has also been getting 90 mins every week. That is why after the Uruguay game I was advocating for him to make a return also he is better and playing at a higher level than Aaron Long.

    • I didn’t see the Monterrey match, but I know he’s a left center-back! I’ve watched Liga MX & Necaxa a lot in ‘17 & ‘18. Every match I’ve seen him play, he’s started, he’s specifically plays left-center back. Obviously, there aren’t as many Americans playing in Liga MX, as in years past, but Alvarado def has the quality, and is consistently in Necaxa’s starting XI.

      Reply
    • While I’ve not seen many of the Liga MX matches Alvarado has been a consistent contributor to his club for a while now. As a Defender who can play across the back line it would be worthwhile to call him into a camp for a closer evaluation.
Personally if there is any interest in the USMNT playing with a 3 back formation than Alvarado makes a ton of since to be in the 23. He is younger & faster than Ream. Has good distribution and can slot into multiple positions. Hell, he even makes more since at LB than Ream….who seems to be the #1 LB option in GB’s mind.
It may be worth testing something like the following in the October matches against Canada & Cuba:
      .
      ———-Pulisic————–Jozy/Sargent————–Boyd———–
      ———————————-Holmes————————————–
      —Robinson/Desk———-McKennie———————-Cannon—
      ———–Alvarado————–Brooks/Long————Miazga——
      ———————————–Steffen————————————-
      .
We should have the bulk of possession which would allow the wide players to stay up field more often while maintaining sufficient cover in defense to shut down counter attacks.
      – At this point I don’t think Adams or Yedlin will be available. If Dest doesn’t accept a the call, use Robinson. If he does accept he could also be fielded at RB while Robinson is used at LB. Not sure the health situation of Brooks or Miazga at this point so their still questionable.

Bench: Zimmerman, Ream, CCV, Lima, Bradley, Morales/Williams, Green, Morris, Arriola, Zardes, Horvath, S. Johnson,

      • He hasn’t played for the National team in four years, you said you haven’t seen him play in Liga Mx much but you slot him right into the starting lineup?

  6. How did Johansson start and only play 11 minutes? Did he come off injured? Also Desavio Payne was getting some minutes at the beginning of the season looks like he dropped back to the bench, UGhhh

  7. I think important to note of our first team we’d called in from Europe only Ream started in his return to his club. Something to think about when considering guys like Gall, Wood, and Soto that haven’t been playing much with their clubs to begin with.

    Reply
    • Soto has tonsillitis right now.
not saying he would’ve played otherwise, but that precluded the possibility of him playing this weekend for sure.
also not saying he deserves a senior call-up, either.
      wouldn’t oppose it, tho.
Wood and Gall both need to get the f outta Dodge and do something if they want MNT call ups.
Wood’s just loitering at Hamburg for the guaranteed cash.
for all i know, Gall’s doing the same at Malmo

      • Kenny Glass-Bones Saief was in a hurry to leave Cincinnati to warm the bench in Belgium. I hope he never gets called up he is dead weight and highly injury prone. I wouldn’t even invest money on him in a fifa PS4 2019 manager career mode transfer window. LOL!??‍♂️?

  8. Ariyibi played the second half for Panetolikos in the Greek Super League.
Adebayo-Smith subbed on in the 77th minute for Boston United in the English National League North
