Sargent scores first goal of season in Bremen win

Josh Sargent has scored his first of the new Bundesliga season.

The U.S. Men’s National Team forward showed great composure and skill in Bremen’s 3-2 win, scoring the second goal for his side in a busy first-half.

Nuri Sahin’s long ball found Sargent who was able to flick the pass over Augsburg keeper Tomas Koubek before finishing into an empty goal.

Augsburg would tie it up after halftime, but Bremen would run away with their first league win of the season after Yuya Osako scored his second goal of the afternoon.

Sargent would play 82 minutes in the match, recording two shots and winning one tackle.

After netting his first goal of the season, Sargent should be brimming with confidence heading into USMNT camp. The striker will look to have a positive return to Gregg Berhalter’s squad after missing out on this summer’s Gold Cup.

  1. could zardes do something like this at peak form and fitness? how about getting back to talent and let’s quit pretending club minutes say who is the better player. and don’t pretend we didn’t know, he had a goal off an over the shoulder trap like this against Bolivia. I am bored with the people who just carry Berhalter’s (tap) water.

    • the absurdity of the approach we are building up is we will be literally the last team in line to acknowledge a player has talent rather than the first. at that point it’s so obvious someone who doesn’t even like soccer watching Sportscenter could do our scouting.

    • Yes it’s so much better to judge someone off what they did 14 months ago. NT needs consistent players, guys that you know what they’re going to do every time. Zardes is no where near the high end of a Sargent, but his normal is better than Sargent’s bad. Like three weeks ago against 5th division side SV Atlas in the German Cup match. He mostly just stood around looking lost for 60 mins. Even Saturday he blew a couple good chances and was gassed after 60 minutes or so. What happens if he doesn’t get that lucky bounce off his chest from his first touch because another inch or two either way it’s a hand ball no goal and the conversation is how he did nothing in his first start. Juan Agudelo used always be complained about why can’t he get a call up, because he’d hit some golazo or bicycle or 30 yard shot into the upper 90. Then he wouldn’t score for 3 months. If you call him up are you getting the golazo or the hit 30 yds wide and 20 yds high? Sargent’s ceiling is as high as maybe we’ve ever had as a striker but he’s got to find consistency. It’s great he can hit a highlight reel goal but can he make the average goal on a regular basis. If he can he’ll play week in and week out for his club.

      • When I’ve seen Sargent play, he has been active and his movement was purposeful to get open. He also did pretty well as a hold-up player against much more mature players. Of course, like all players, if he gets discouraged because he is not getting the ball and stops being active, that is a concern, but I have not seen it.

  2. So two shots and one tackle are the stats we have? Would love to know how he played overall – completed passes, touches, etc. And how did he lineup – target man, a forward in a 442, etc. One tackle is meaningless for a forward.

Appreciate the article and video but would love to read more commentary on his play. Hes a player we all have our eyes on.

    • 4-3-1-2 with Osaka playing just underneath Fulkrug and Sargent. Seemed like he was playing more centrally than he did in his two other appearances this season.

  3. Sweet. Can’t remember the last time I can saw an American make such a wonder goal (I’m sure someone will remind me). I should say an American male, since Carli Lloyd’s goal vs. Japan from the halfway line in the World Cup final 4+ years ago was at least as special.

    • Got a little lucky that first touch bounced off his chest but was smooth after that. Pulisic had an almost identical goal against Hoffenheim in Dec. 2017 sorry don’t know how to link it from my phone. Pulisic didn’t have to bring it down over his shoulder though. Now if he can just put 6 or 7 more this season.

  4. watch the goal someplace. i cannot believe he got to take the summer off “because form” so i could watch trash play. and if you saw the goal versus bolivia he’s shown this same quality months ago for the Nats. the problem with the NT right now is it feels like looking for players who might have these qualities is somehow more scary than finishing second with too many comfortable (because we use them all the time) journeymen out there.

    • Obviously Sargent was in this form in May and that’s why Bremen wasn’t playing him if they had qualified for the Europa League (1 pt out) or won the Pokal (semis) all that prize money would have had huge tax implications, so instead the only played him 7 minutes the final three months of the season. Also why he probably why he played 8 minutes in week 1 and 2 didn’t want to get off to too good of a start.

      • yes, let’s just follow the roller coaster of club form around like children rather than assess players like adults.

  5. This is some Chris Waddle vs PSG during OM glory days magic right there (minus back heel to score…Magic Chris was one of a kind after all!!)
