Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Carter-Vickers, Pulisic, and more

Stoke City needed a win heading into the international break and Cameron Carter-Vickers was a part of the club’s first in league play this season.

The American defender played the full 90 on Saturday in a 2-1 road win over Swansea City. Carter-Vickers looked to have taken control of a first-team spot with the Potters this season since starting slow on loan. The 22-year-old finished the match with an 86% passing completion rate, while winning five of his six individual duels.

He also won five of six aerial battles, made seven clearances, and made five recoveries at the Liberty Stadium. The win gives Stoke five points this season and will return from the international break three points from safety.

Elsewhere, Christian Pulisic registered his second league assist of the season for Chelsea while DeAndre Yedlin played the full 90 in Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Manchester United. Sergino Dest went the full 90 in Ajax’s league win, Alfredo Morales returned for Fortuna Dusseldorf, and Weston McKennie came off the bench for Schalke.

William Yarbrough continued in goal for Club Leon in their 1-1 league draw. Eric Lichaj could not help Hull City avoid a lopsided Yorkshire Derby loss to Huddersfield Town. Jesse Marsch’s Salzburg trounced Rheindorf Altach 6-0 after a midweek defeat to Liverpool.

  1. Someone explain to me again why young players playing 90 in leagues equal (or better) aren’t being called up for Camps.
Ream (Championship) – 90 minutes gets called in…A. Robinson, CCV (Championship), Alvarado (Liga MX) & EPB (Austria) go 90 min. and are overlooked
Boyd (Turkish) – DNP gets called….Green (B-2) goes 79 min and is overlooked, Wright (Dutch) goes 87 min and is overlooked.

It’s almost as if someone is afraid that calling in these types of players will push MLS & Old folks off the team (Lovitz, Zimmerman, Zardes, Baird, etc…).

    • Meh. Not that I disagree w your preferences (mostly I’d have preferred to see the guys you suggest, as well), but the whole conspiracy theory angle is tedious. I mean what are you even attempting to suggest here? To me it’s just another head coach selecting a squad. Always gonna be disagreements about the fringe selections. He just sees the talent differently from you. It is, in fact, that simple.

  2. While people still waiting for pulisic to fulfill his potential Yedlin’s still starting every week in the EPL
He’s easily the best American player over the last couple of years.
    End of story.

    • Yedlin just started his first match in six months for Newcastle. Please return to “Johnathan Gonzalez watch”….. The news must be coming fast and thick over there! We can’t afford to have you distracting yourself with these trivial matters!

  3. Yedlin was awwesome in that Manchester Untied game win. Was making great tackles and ecxellwnt one and two touch passing looking like his old self.

    • No doubt today was a very good day for Yedlin. He isn’t a kid any more and it had been starting to look like the prime of career was about to pass him by without so much as a whimper. Hope he continues on this path.

    • I hear Zimmerman suffered a head injury. People should prepare themselves for Omar, he’s close and has been in good form for TFC. Just bringing Miles from the U23s would be another possibility.

      Reply
    • It has to be someone who’ve been in contact with to call a club on Sunday wanting a guy isn’t going to happen. Omar happens to also be close and won’t have to travel after the Canada match. They might not even add anyone if Zim can’t go because we have Ream that could play LB or CB.
