Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Brooks, Palmer-Brown, and more

Wolfsburg returned to Bundesliga play on Saturday and John Brooks helped the team earn a shutout win.

Brooks and Wolfsburg held their own against Eintracht Frankfurt in a 2-0 victory which bumped them to seventh in the Bundesliga table. Despite allowing nine Frankfurt shots on goal, Wolfsburg would hang on after scoring a goal in each half. Brooks won five of his eight duels in the match, while making 11 clearances and making six recoveries. The win for Wolfsburg snapped a four-match winless streak in all competitions and sets them up for a Europa League trip to Ukraine this week.

Elsewhere, Tim Ream helped Fulham to a 2-1 London Derby win over Queens Park Rangers. Christian Pulisic failed to do much in Chelsea’s 2-1 road loss to Manchester City. Zack Steffen and Alfredo Morales both played 90 minutes in Fortuna Dusseldorf’s 4-0 loss to Bayern Munich. Erik Palmer-Brown helped Austria Wien to a league win, Niko Hamalainen played 90 minutes in Kilmarnock’s home victory, and Matthew Olosunde and Rotherham United downed MK Dons on the road.

Comments

  1. I commented on the “Pulisic is fit again and available for the Chelsea vs City game” but I will post the same comment here.

City showed quality; pressed high and dominated the game. The competition wasn’t as close as the final score suggested.

Also watched the highlights of the Bayern Munich and Dusseldorf game. The 2nd Bayern goal was a real stinker. I wonder when Steffen is going to learn to exercise common sense to just get rid of the ball instead of forcing it to build from the back (exact mistake as in the 0-3 Mexico loss) and gifted the opponent an easy goal.

  2. Glad to see Wood getting a lot of playing time. Also, why does Pulisic not pressure the ball when he defends he just lets the team dribble around him without pressuring. I have noticed it in nats team and Chelsea performances he does it. He does it on the national team too. Lampard an Beerholder need to instill in him to put pressure on the ball and make an attempt at a tackle instead of letting them dribble freely. It is very frustrating and and a open invite to come and score. SMH

    • Hamburg scores both goals after Wood was subbed off. Whoscored rated him as the lowest player on the team. Neither of those things tell the whole story but don’t be surprised if Wood is back on the bench next week.

  3. Nick Taitague seems to be back from injury playing for the 2nd match in a row. This week getting a start and going 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw with RW Essen. Nick picked up a yellow card.

Leipzig manager said that Adams will be able to practice in full this week, not sure if that means he’ll dress next week or not.
