Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Pulisic, Ariyibi, and more

Christian Pulisic is on fire for English Premier League side Chelsea.

The 21-year-old registered his fifth league goal in his last three matches on Saturday, scoring in a 2-0 home derby win over Crystal Palace. Pulisic played 80 minutes at Stamford Bridge, but continued his terrific run of form to help Chelsea jump to third in the EPL standings.

Pulisic was in the right place at the right time to head home after Michy Batshuayi’s shot was deflected. The point was Pulisic’s sixth in his last eight appearances in all competitions. Now after helping Chelsea to another league win this season, Pulisic will head into U.S. Men’s National Team duty this week.

Elsewhere, DeAndre Yedlin recorded his first goal of the season for Newcastle United, while Emmanuel Sabbi also scored in league play for Hobro. Erik Palmer-Brown registered his first assist of the season in a 2-1 win for Austria Wien. Weston McKennie went head-to-head against Zack Steffen and Alfredo Morales in a 3-3 Bundesliga draw. Ian Harkes went the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 derby win for Dundee United.

Julian Green scored on a tremendous free kick for Greuther Furth, Gboly Ariyibi scored his first goal for Greek side Panetolikos, and Matt Miazga helped Reading to a shutout win over Luton Town.

  1. hey Larry-
i was combing through line-ups for EFL Trophy matches today (Tuesday, 11/12) and found Jordan Adebayo-Smith on Lincoln’s bench.
looks like his loan to Boston United was terminated early or something.

  2. “PREMIER LEAGUE CUP U-23
Luca De La Torre started and played 90 minutes in Fulham’s 4-3 loss to Watford on Sunday.”

i feel like this undersells de la Torre’s weekend a bit.

he was in the 18 for the first team on Saturday!
and today he started and had another 2 assists for the u23s.

  3. I think most of us can agree that the EPL, Bundesliga and League 1 are clearly superior to MLS, and that he EFL & B-2 are at least on Par with MLS if not better (I and many like me see them as better). Then there are the big/power house clubs in weaker leagues (Ajax, PSV, etc…) that consistently have top level talent.
I believe that if you take the Americans from these leagues/clubs we’d be able to field a more balanced and capable USMNT than the one we’ve regularly seen called up by Berhaulter.

    Keeper: Steffen (B-1), Horvath (BEL)
Defense: Yedlin (EPL), Brooks (B-1), Ream (EFL), Miazga (EFL), Robinson, (EFL),
    Dest (ERE), CCV (EFL)
Midfield: McKennie (B-1), Morales (B-1), Homes (EFL), Green (B-2),
Attack: Pulisic (EPL), Sargent (B-1), Wright (ERE), Boyd (TUR),

That’s 17 players who are currently significant contributors on a weekly basis in leagues or at clubs that are superior to MLS. When Adams & Weah return to action we’d have 19 players.
Leaving 4 slots to arguably be filled by MLS players….At least until other options in Europe start seeing consistent minutes with their clubs 1st Teams.

    MLS players to choose from:
GK: S. Johnson, Guzan, Hamid, Gonzales
    D: Long, Cannon…Or Alavarado/EPB from a foreign league.
    M: Bradley, Roldan,
    A: Jozy, Morris, Zardes

Maybe after the November failure we’ll see a new coach hired who will be better able to evaluate talent and select a squad who’ll be able to compete.

    • You forgot Adams, but he is still working his way back so I’m summoning you left him off due to injury as if it we’re this window only?

      Reply
      • The roster I listed was 17 players who are currently playing in Europe in leagues/clubs on a consistent bases…either going 90 every game or are part of a rotation where they are starting every-other game.
I did mention Adams & Weah would be included once they returned from injury. But seeing as they’ve both been on the shelf for a while….it’s unclear when they’ll return and what form they’ll be in once they do.

    • Wow Lost in Space absolutely hit the nail on the head with this one. I have absolutely nothing to add to that and leaving 4 slots open for MLS players because of the superiority of our player pool abroad…… lol, priceless

    • Have no idea why you have Bradley and Roldan grouped with the MLS player to choose from, neither should be nowhere near discussion for selection.

  4. For those curious, this was not in fact the first time two Americans have scored on the same day in the EPL. McBride and Bocanegra combined to score both of Fulhams goals in a 2-1 win at Newcastle back in 2006 (yup I’m not young anymore!). Not aware of any other instances.
