Report: Southampton, Marseille chasing USMNT defender Long

Aaron Long is reportedly being scouted by a pair of European sides.

According to Sky Sports, English Premier League side Southampton and Ligue 1 outfit Marseille are after the New York Red Bulls and U.S. Men’s National Team center back. Both clubs are interested in acquiring Long in the January Transfer Window.

Long was linked with a move to West Ham United in the summer, but could not acquire a work permit. Now after playing regularly for the USMNT, Long could make the switch if the Red Bulls are willing to listen to an offer.

The 27-year-old has continued to blossom into one of the top defender in MLS. After winning the 2018 MLS Defender of the Year award, Long has become one of Gregg Berhalter’s regular choices in the USMNT backline.

Since joining the Red Bulls, Long has made 89 league appearances. He’s also won 15 caps with the USMNT since making his debut in 2018.

Long got on the scoresheet in the USMNT’s 4-1 Concacaf Nations League win over Canada on Friday.

Southampton have struggled this EPL season, currently sitting in 19th place under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Marseille are second in France’s top-flight under former Tottenham boss Andres Villas-Boas,

  1. I think the Red Bulls would have a hard time replacing him too and they can sell him for similar money when his contract is close to up.

So WHY would they sell? They wouldn’t, they shouldn’t. IF it was a real team and Long really wanted to go, maybe that forces NY to do something they don’t want to….but it isn’t.

  2. The Red Bulls would find it hard to replace him. Given that they have had a very uneven performance from their fullbacks this season and learned how much their attack suffered without BWP they will need to find a lot of new talent, even if they do not part with him.

I think he would do well for most teams. He does not make many defensive blunders, is good at 1v1 defending, can get forward on set pieces and is reasonably athletic. Of course, CBs are seldom the reason a team turns around so I am not sure he would be enough to really help Southhampton. I think he would do better to find a team that is not struggling, but could use a new CB to replace an aging veteran.

  3. I’m wondering. Is Aaron Long by any chance the son of the Canadian MNT’s manager, John Herdman’s son? The two have a lot of resemblances.

  4. Great story! UC Riverside, USL, MLS, to a top League in Europe! Was a 6, then moved to CB, if he goes to Ligue 1-CB. If he plays in the Premier, he gets move to a 6, i.e.- Geoff Cameron. This is what perseverance and hard work look like. This is American as it gets! If we can’t acknowledge that, then we’re haters!

  5. Didn’t he recently sign a new contract with NYRB? If so than I expect MLS to put a price tag on him that many clubs may find hard to cough up considering his age and experience level. I’m not saying he’s a bad player, but if they’re asking 15-20 M….than there are other options out there that could be had at equal or better value.

    • Why? He doesn’t look any worse than Brooks for USMNT and Brooks is a starter for a top division team.

So was Miazga when he was in Holland and France and he is certainly not better than Long

      • Bro dont ask dumb questions trolling. Miazga kept a clean sheet against Mexico calling Lainez tiny. Long has not been able to shut out Mexico as a CB. He is old and not in his prime and the lone Canadian goal was his fault and the defeat in Toronto, Canada was his fault and Reams. Read my comment again bro! I said he is good enough for an English championship team that is where Miazga plays. You are out of your MLS apologist mind if you think Long is just as good as Brooks. Lets make a deal to never communicate with one another on this site. We will never see eye to eye and you are a MLS Apologist. You probably so delusional you think USA mnt fielding a full MLS roster will get us through qualifying and win a WC. LOL

      • You all are so sensitive and delusional about the truth. You think Long would be able to hang and stop Mbappe, Memhpis Depay, Mane, or Kun Aguero.?????‍♂️

    • I agree with Mysterious. Maybe Long can make it in France but I just don’t see it. Long to me is more of a Championship, B2 and maybe Holland level CB. No way Long makes it in the EPL
