Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Adams, Reyna, and more

Tyler Adams retained his starting spot for RB Leipzig in the return of Bundesliga play on Saturday.

The midfielder started and played 86 minutes in a 3-1 home comeback win over Union Berlin, putting in a strong shift for Julian Nagelsmann’s side. Adams finished with an 84% passing completion rate, while having 104 touches in the match. He won eight of 14 individual duels, won four fouls, made seven recoveries, and won two aerial battles. Saturday’s win kept Leipzig atop the league table as they reached the 40-point mark. Sitting four points clear of second-place Bayern Munich, Adams and Co. next travel to Eintracht Frankfurt on Jan. 25th.

Elsewhere, Timmy Chandler scored a game-winning goal for Eintracht Frankfurt in a 2-1 road win over Hoffenheim. It was Chandler’s first league goal since the 2017-18 Bundesliga season, which helped Frankfurt to an important road win.

Lynden Gooch continued his strong run of form for Sunderland, scoring his fourth goal in his last five matches. The U.S. Men’s National Team prospect’s curling effort late in the second-half, extended the Black Cats’ unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions.

Youngsters Giovanni Reyna and Indiana Vassilev made their respective league debuts for Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa respectively. Reyna played the final 15+minutes of Dortmund’s 5-3 road win over Augsburg while Vassilev and the Villains tied Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 at the Amex.

Richard Ledezma bagged a pair of goals for Jong PSV this weekend, continuing his impressive domestic season. Although he has yet to debut for the first team in Eredivisie play, he continued to rack up minutes in a 4-2 loss to FC Volendam.

  1. Ariyibi can’t even make the first team on Greek league. He should just hamg it up and look into coaching or something other than playing. Smh very disappointing!

    • He played in their first 14 matches starting 9 and had gone the full 90 in four straight matches before being subbed off in the 74th minute Dec. 22. He hasn’t dressed since so either a serious discipline issue or more likely an injury.

      • East that’s a good tip I never thought of checking betting sites for injury reports in the smaller leagues.

      • yea the betting sites have decent last minute info on players, and sometimes links to fan chats dishing dirt and rumors in real time.
i mean you gotta take some of it with a grain of salt, but there’s some info to be found there.

  2. While it seems that everyone projects Adams as a defensive mid, I sure like his passing. I think he should be put in the middle and given a chance as a playmaker,. Maybe he could be the next Claudio Reyna. Any updates on Steffen? It’s been over 2 months since he missed the the Nation’s League games in November.

    • Huh? His greatest strength has been and always will be breaking up the opposition’s attack before develops into danger. He is not a playmaker, and frankly struggles in those positions. Look at where he plays and how he plays with Leipzig. Always trailing offensively, always in position to press initial build up defensively.

    • Steffen played 6 matches for Dusseldorf after missing Nations League.
he was held out this weekend over a patella injury, according to the club

  3. A few welcome additions and returns to the Yanks Abroad.
Reyna – 18 min for BvB. A welcome new attacking option if he continues to see minutes.
Vassilev – 23 min for AV, a much needed potential option at Striker.
Adams – Back to playing 90.
McKennie – Back to full training. Will hopefully be back playing next week.

Considering the Olympic qualification is happening in March, which will keep some of the MLS names at homem it will be interesting to see who gets invited to the March Sr. USMNT friendlies. We could see some fresh faces and some players many of us have been calling for…A. Robinson, EPB, etc…since anyone called for Olympic duty isn’t going to be released for these friendlies as well.

    Reply
    • players are required to be released for the March friendlies, even if they’re not required to be released for Olympic qualifying.

      Reply
      • I think what Lost meant was a guy like Ledezma might not be released for Olympic Qualifying but would be for the friendlies so Aaronson would go with Olympic team and Ledezma could go with NT.

      • well i’d certainly be cool with that
although i wouldn’t rule out Ledezma’s release for OQ, either.
Jong PSV are practically guaranteed relegation to the reserve league, at this point.
