Red-hot Chandler keeps rolling, scores double in Eintracht Frankfurt romp

Timmy Chandler made some personal history on Friday in Eintracht Frankfurt’s latest triumph, scoring two goals to continue his red-hot form to start 2020.

Deployed as a winger for the fourth straight Bundesliga match, Chandler scored two goals i 10 minutes in a 5-0 Bundesliga rout over Augsburg at Commerzbank Arena on Friday.

His first goal broke the deadlock in the opening half, before the veteran added to his tally early into the second half.

In the 37th minute, Chandler was played in by Dominik Kohr, before rifling a right-footed shot into the top of the net. The goal gave Frankfurt a lead in front of their home fans.

Chandler’s day wasn’t done as he doubled his team’s lead in the 48th minute from a corner kick. Filip Kostic’s corner was headed in by the 29-year-old off the crossbar and in.

It was his fourth goal in his last four matches, second only to Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haland for the most league goals scored so far in 2020.

Chandler played the remainder of the match as Frankfurt ran away with a 3-0 victory. It moved the club into ninth place in the league table on 28 points, six behind sixth-place Schalke.

The red-hot form Chandler is enjoying should push him back into the U.S. Men’s National Team picture, and earn him consideration for a call-up for the March friendlies against Netherlands and Wales. Chandler hasn’t been with the USMNT since 2016, but told SBI in October that he was open to a return.

Eintracht Frankfurt has started off 2020 unbeaten with four wins and a draw in all competitions, while also advancing into the German Cup quarterfinals after a 3-1 win over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

Up next is a trip to face Gio Reyna and Borussia Dortmund on Feb. 14th before hosting Jesse Marsch and Red Bull Salzburg in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie.

  1. A interesting article
“….You can spot talent but only if you know what to look for. On the other hand, if you don’t know what to look for, you can end up spending tons of time and resources on searching, finding, and finally acquiring a pointless talent. What might be considered a skill today can turn out to be useless in the future.
Talent comes in many forms, but the question is whether you can spot it in others when you encounter it. When searching for talent, many look for something recognizable (regardless of their inferior interpretations), and that is where many go wrong because not all talents are recognizable at first; as many are hidden talents dying to be unleashed. The challenge most coaches face when looking for talent is that you like what you can recognize, and you can only recognize something you’ve seen before…..”

At 29, a player with over 180 appearances in Bundesliga, Timothy Chandler didn’t just go to bed one day lame and wake up the next day a top league starter/scorer. Its asinine how behind we are in recognizing, AND UTILIZING, the talent we have in our player pool. It’s simple…….when it comes to soccer we simply lack the know-how to recognize talent

  2. The position does matter, since wasn’t he previously a right back? It may be partly just that other teams aren’t yet used to seeing him on the wing, but it’s great that he has been able to use that to his advantage to get into spaces where he can deliver, but doesn’t have to run quite as far.
    .
I don’t remember much about past WCQ, in particular what time of year it was that Chandler might have asked not to have to make the trip, if he indeed did. Maybe some journalists can clear that up, or even address that with him in an interview.
    .
Just in general, though, we can’t have it both ways with European-based players. We acknowledge on the one hand that we really need at least some players who are good enough to gain starting places on fast, sharp European teams, because even though MLS is getting better, it’s still not as strong a league.
    .
But many fans don’t seem to realize how much it is to ask them to do all that hard work in the first place, and then break that rhythm to appear over here, often in hot, humid weather, flying long distances, risking injury on dubious surfaces and with limited protection from laissez-faire refs, against hostile Mexican and Central American fans. And on top of that, often without a lot of individual appreciation from US fans, who may not have seen them play enough to really root for them, either out of misplaced nationalism or just because soccer coverage here is so limited and bigger teams like Bayern often seem to be favored on what TV coverage there is.
    .
If we’re ever going to have the depth to be competitive in a World Cup, surely we need to be able to win at least some of those qualifying games by rotating players, without calling up all the European-based ones every time. That should even be a good thing in giving more caps to more different guys. We have a lot of players who deserve some level of recognition.
    .
It seems to me that the coaches generally, including Berhalter but also those before him, are aware of that balancing act and willing to work with players and clubs to try to find the best compromise depending on the time of year. I just wish more fans could simply support players on both sides of the pond. Especially for the boys who grew up elsewhere, and may not even be as comfortable in English as in another language, but have chosen to play for the US anyway, that moral support could affect their confidence and in turn their eagerness to play.
    .
So it’s great to see Chandler doing well and getting some good press, which may help him keep playing well, and make fans happier to support him, in a virtuous cycle.

  3. Funny! RW is where I would like to see Dest. It’s not a surprise, Chandler is closer to goal, the better his chances to score. Fullbacks have defensive responsibilities that wingers don’t. I still don’t like the fact, he turned down call ups in WC qualifying, only to be included in ‘14 WC squad. #TheNorthRemembers

  4. Chandler is red hot berhalter needs to give him a call up in Europe dest can play on the right. Chandler is playing in bundesliga far better than any player currently playing that position in any other league aside from dest. We need our very best and the real test begins to take shape and the microsope is zooming in more on berhalters call ups decisions and tactics. I want to be in the world cup. Call up the best and play them in the positions they really are comfortable playing in. Also a strong mature goalie is needed. Steffan hasn’t showed maturity instead of clearing balls to appease berhalter he continued to play out of back passing ball through dangerous areas and has caused us 2 goals.

  5. I don’t know. He should have to score 5 more goals before he can earn a call up and make his way into our deep pool that includes MLS stand outs: Arriola, Corey Baird, Mihailovic, Jonathan Lewis. And that’s not even mentioning our top guys riding the bench on European teams like Tim Weah and Tyler Boyd.

    • how about we stop acting like Chandler hasn’t missed almost a year and a half of soccer because of major injuries, so this idea that Greg has ignored him is rather ridiculous to me

  6. Holy smokes! “It was his fourth goal in his last four matches, second only to Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland for the most league goals scored so far in 2020.” The USMNT have a new scoring machine in the Bundesliga, only second to Erling Haaland! Mr. Greg Berhalter, what the heck are you waiting for?
