Steffen returns to Manchester for knee examinations

Zack Steffen has left Fortuna Dusseldorf training to undergo further examinations on his knee.

The Bundesliga club announced Tuesday that Steffen has returned to his parent club Manchester City for the next dew days. Fortuna Dusseldorf physiotherapist Lucas Trittel, who is involved in all processes as part of the medical department, will accompany Steffen.

Steffen has been sidelined since Dec. 22nd with a knee injury, forcing him to miss the start of the second-half of the German season. He also missed the USMNT’s November Concacaf Nations League matches with knee tendonitis.

When on the pitch, Steffen has been one of the consistent goalkeepers in the Bundesliga. The former Columbus Crew man is sixth in the division with 67 saves this season, while also posting a 0.88 GAA (goals against average).

Both clubs have been in constant communication in regards to Steffen’s injury. Fortuna Dusseldorf sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel and Manchester City sporting director Txiki Begiristain have agreed on this procedure in close consultation with the medical departments of both clubs.

The 24-year-old returned to training last week for Dusseldorf, but could be set for another frustrating spell on the sidelines.

Dusseldorf has struggled in the top-flight this season, currently sitting 16th in the 18-team league. Despite advancing to the German Cup quarterfinals last week, Dusseldorf have only earned four league wins this campaign, which let to the firing of Friedhelm Funkel earlier this year.

  1. Sorry to hear this news, as Steffen had seemed to be doing so well before what has evidently turned into a nagging injury.

It’s true that Horvath was evidently unlucky to be ousted by Mignolet, but it’s also true he hasn’t been playing. I don’t suppose he’s anywhere near the pipeline to back up keepers like Pickford or Arrizabalaga who seem to be struggling. Where could he realistically move to?

At least the March games are only friendlies, but they’re a couple of really big friendlies for this team, which can’t always get top opponents. It would be a pity if a number of possible starters were unavailable.

On that cheerful note, apparently Tyler Adams, only recently back from injury, has picked up a calf muscle tear in training and will be out at least another couple of weeks, including UCL away to Spurs.

Do we know what Miazga is out with and for how long, or why Brooks has been benched lately? Or how Pulisic is coming along?

I always appreciate it if SBI can help keep us up to date with overseas situations like these, which aren’t always well reported here.

    • Ive read that Miazga and Julian Green have the same injury, torn ankle ligaments, which is going to keep them out for the forseeable future.

Tyler Adams just came back from a nasty injury, so if this report is true about a new injury then I guess we cant really be surprised considering the injury bug has become a thing within USSoccer

  2. maybe you want to identify some other keepers besides the 1 and not named hamid or johnson or guzan. when did the 1 jersey become the royal succession no matter how you play.

    • so how about you tell us who should be above Hamid, Johnson and Guzan when Steffen isn’t available? Because it sure as hell shouldn’t be Horvath, who i don’t think has played all season which tells you all you need to know about his devlopment and progression. And none of the youth keepers are ready for that level, so again who should be the backups?

      • In fairness to Horvath, he was starting and doing quite well until Club Brugge suddenly got googly eyes for a former Liverpool hand (and native Belgian) in Mignolet. He needs a move or a loan badly.

  3. Hope he is 100% for the upcoming friendlies. I will not count my chickens? before they hatch, and have prepared myself that he may be left off to heal/rest.

    • This knee thing must be pretty serious if he had to go back to Citeh for a further evaluation….we’ve had entirely too many injuries from our nt pool players, and yet people wonder why the senior team can’t put it all together
