Tyler Adams to miss Champions League match with calf injury

Tyler Adams is set for another stint on the sidelines, with his latest injury set to cost him his chance at making his UEFA Champions League debut.

Adams is set to miss a week with a calf injury suffered recently in training with RB Leipzig, meaning he will miss the German club’s upcoming Champions League clash with Tottenham.

Having returned in December from a long injury layoff, Adams had settled into a regular starting role for RB Leipzig, but will now miss this weekend’s match against Josh Sargent and Werder Bremen, as well as next week’s Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Tottenham, which would have marked Adams’ UEFA Champions League debut.

“Ever since I was a little kid, all I can do anytime someone mentions Champions League, I get goosebumps,” Adams recently told SI’s Planet Futbol Podcast. “Because hearing that anthem from a young age, I mean, usually I’m on my couch, you know, turning the TV on and watching everyone walk out to it. And I’m like, ‘Wow, what a sight that is.’ I can’t imagine what they’re feeling.

“And then to potentially be one of those players now that kids are turning on their TVs and watching me walk out to it is a special feeling. So I hope I have that opportunity.”

Adams will now have to wait a bit longer for that opportunity with what is the latest injury setback for a player who has endured several injuries in just the past year. He missed six weeks last spring with a groin injury before making a brief return prior to skipping the Concacaf Gold Cup in order to recover. A torn ligament in his foot soon followed, then a groin injury, leaving Adams sidelined from June through December of 2019.

Adams, who turns 21 on Friday, had recently worked his way back into the starting rotation for RB Leipzig, which has enjoyed a strong season in the Bundesliga. Adams has seen time at right back, right wingback, and in his favored defensive midfield role, with RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann making full use of Adams’ versatility.

  1. Did I just imagine that I helped call this story to your attention, after coming across it by chance on a German website?

Thank you for, apparently, using my tip uncredited and unsourced, deleting my entire post in the midweek thread, and not answering any questions about other USMNT players in Europe dealing with injuries or selection issues.

I still can’t understand why foul-mouthed rants against Klinsmann are indulged, but literate posts trying to help others are not welcome.

  2. Muscle strains/injuries are common after a long lay-off. It’s nearly impossible to duplicate match conditions/fitness on the training ground. It’s why teams will usually phase a player recently back from injury over the course of multiple games…slowing increasing the minutes game after game.
Adams was thrust back into the starting XI upon his return. Played 80+ his first game back, than I believe 90’s since.
He’s likely to fight these nagging injuries through the remainder of the season, but at his age should rebound quickly unless it’s repeats of the same muscle. If this carries into next season than I’ll start getting worried about him being injury prone.

  3. I wonder if they are just running these guys so much it is inevitable. They put so many players on a team, the players are expendable. Maybe they just count on attrition?

  4. At what point do you say, he probably doesnt reach his full potential, or he already reached it?
if a 31 year old got injured this much, the write him off, but a 21 year old? First of all he shouldn’t be getting this injured, second, I guess he recovers quicker for the next injury.

  5. It’s concerning. There’s no doubt about that. When you look at Pulisic, Mckennie, Adams and Steffen among others all being sidelined, it’s concerning. The nature of the injuries. Outside of Mckennie. And unfortunately each seems to be injured in such a way that you have to look directly at their style and surmise, yes, they’ve brought it on themselves and/or their individual style makes them more susceptible to that particular injury. Different day and age, but donovan and Dempsey, michael bradley, tim howard – very rare that they spent any more than a month on the sidelines at any point in their careers. The technology, the daily regiment that these players have the benefit of compared to players in years past… it’s concerning.

    • Green, Lichaj, and Miazga are also out. There are probably some MLS based players who are injured, we just don’t hear about them since they are not playing games right now.

Injuries are a fact of life for a professional player. It is the exception who does not miss some stretches due to injury. Bobby Convey, Dempsey and Morris all earned MLS comeback of the year after injury, Dempsey’s irregurlar heartbeat later ended his career. Another of your examples, M. Bradley missed almost his entire first full year in MLS due to injury, he played hurt in the 2014 WC, he missed one USMNT game when he was inured in the warm-up, has hardly been injury free.
