Weah makes first appearance for Lille since August, suffers another injury

For the first time since August 2019, Timothy Weah stepped on the pitch for Ligue 1 side Lille.

Weah played the final 10 minutes of Lille’s 2-1 home defeat to Marseille on Sunday. It was Weah’s third league appearance of the season and first since Aug. 19th after dealing with numerous injuries this season.

It wasn’t all good news for Weah, who appeared to suffer an injury during his appearance. Weah confirmed on Instagram later on Sunday that he had, in fact, suffered a new injury:

Despite a 51st-minute goal from Victor Osimhen, Lille conceded two goals in a two-minute span to suffer its ninth league loss of the campaign.

The 19-year-old American joined Lille on a $12 million deal from Paris Saint-Germain back in July 2019. He totaled 74 minutes in matches against Nantes and Amiens in August, but had been sidelined until January with a torn hamstring.

Weah returned to training back in mid-January and returned to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Sunday.

His injury forced him to miss 22 league matches, as well as Lille’s Champions League group stage schedule throughout the end of 2019. Weah also missed out on several U.S. Men’s National Team camps under head coach Gregg Berhalter, who he’s yet to appear for since the 46-year-old took over in Dec. 2018.

Should he remain injury-free, Weah could be a possible candidate for the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team who kick off Olympic Qualifying in March. Jason Kreis’ side are seeking its first Olympic berth since 2008 and will face Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic in group stage play.

Now with his fitness coming back, Weah will aim to continue earning consistent first team minutes and help Lille remain in the top-four race in Ligue 1. The club are in fourth place with 40 points through 25 matches, two points clear of fifth place Monaco.

Up next is a home date with Toulouse on Feb. 22nd.

  1. A perfect time for his return; with the recent injury to Arriola and the continued struggles of Boyd the wing position is an open competition. Pulisic & Morris appear to the the current referred options, but beyond them it’s wide open.
Weah, Reyna, Llanez are all young options currently on the rise.
De La Fuente is a few steps behind them, but worth keeping an eye on.
Chandler has seen a resurgence lately with his club, but has rarely converted his club form to his USMNT performances. Still worthy of a look, but he’s a short term fix @ 30.
Boyd is still an option, but his club minutes have dropped significantly. And if Weah & Reyna continue to see minutes (in better leagues) they should leapfrog him in short order.
Never been sold on Lewis…but I guess he’d be an option as well.
Zardes has been used on the wing, and could return to seeing minutes there if the other options don’t pan out….or if we need a workman like player to tire the opposition as he represents a more defensive work rate (similar to Arriola), but we give up some of the more technical aspects of the position.

    • In my depth chart, I have Saucedo @ LW, and Gooch @ RW. If Morris is a 9 & CP @ 10/attacking-mid. At the moment, I give an edge to Gall & Sabbi as wingers, ahead of players coming back from injury, or Reyna, Vassilev & Llanez. If CP is injured, then Lletget. If Morris is a winger, I would like to see Super Novakovich @ CF. He hasn’t scored much in Italy. I think, he needs another opportunity w/ USMNT.

      • Isnt it a little silly right now to put players who have yet to suit up for the senior team under Greg Berhalter to be on any depth chart. Gall, Saucedo, Gooch, Vassilev and Sabbi are all on the outside lookong in, matter of fact each one of them, except Gall and Gooch, is olympic eligible and will more than likely be with that team in march considering the importance the federation is putting into qualifying for Tokyo. Llanez will definitely be with the 23’s, Gooch in my opinion doesnt deserve a call up bc he’s in League One and Nova hasnt scored a goal in forever.

      • I hope Saucedo is allowed to play with U23s but if Pumas will only release him for NT I wouldn’t be opposed. It appears that Llanez already has the OK for OQ from the way he was talked about in January. Not sure about Sabbi or Gall, Sabbi is on a bad team in a weak league and Gall rarely played towards the end last season. Scored this weekend but against a third division side off the bench when it was already 5-0. No problem with s Gooch in March given start of MLS and OQ but not sure his good season in 3rd division is an indication he’s a player beyond that. Wright would another since it’s in Europe guy but someone I see in June or the fall.

      • Ronniet- key word “My” depth chart. I don’t think GBs, would match mine. Roldan as attacking mid? Lovitz as a starter? I put a pool together of players, who have @ least, one cap and/or playing professionally, w/ YNT players included. I got over 100 players and selected 3 teams (A,B,C) of 23 players, in positions the players play w/ club or country. 69 players is easy when you have time on your hands. SBI recently did one! Different sites have done the same exercise. “MY” team A has taken a hit w/ injuries. (Adams, CP, Arriola, Yedlin, etc) Silly or not, it’s not hard for me to figure out, who I would like to see.

      • 2 THINK, i was in no way diminishing or trying to put down “your” depth chart, but more so talking from a general perspective on these things typically go with call ups. So, I apologize if it came off that way
