Giovanni Reyna was slated to make his first start for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, but a prematch injury forced him out of the starting lineup.
The Bundesliga club rolled to a 4-0 Rivierderby win over rivals Schalke at an empty Signal Iduna Park. However, Reyna was replaced by Thorgan Hazard in Lucien Favre’s starting lineup. And no official news has been given on the status of his injury.

Reyna has made eight league appearances since joining Borussia Dortmund’s first team in January. Although being reduced to substitute appearances mainly, the 17-year-old has scored one goal and added one assist across all competitions.
Borussia Dortmund are second in the league table, one point behind leaders Bayern Munich heading into the resumption of league play. Schalke dropped out of the top-six following the lopsided loss, one that saw USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie among many players putting in a poor shift.
It was a game where both his strengths and weaknesses were on display. He made some excellent defensive challenges and interceptions, and yet he overreached on more than a few passing attempts. His team plays an uncompromising pressing style, yet I didn’t see much urgency around him, so that made him look more stranded at times. (In terms of space and position, I didn’t think he looked bad)
The larger question is, do you start him if the national team needs more possession/maturity in midfield? Gotta love the intangibles, but…
But hey, at least we’re having the debate, as we can about young players’ strengths and weaknesses throughout this emerging player pool.

No he didn’t! Several give aways early on and several instamces where he failed to track back or track runners on several of Dortmunds goals…not a good at all and I guarantee he would tell you that as well!
Who doesn’t have a few give a ways every game? They were totally out classed he was best player on his team today. If he plays that way every game I’m good with it.
Reminds me of 2008 Michael Bradley, if you’re casually watching you think he’s playing really well he’s all over the place. Then you watch closely and you pull your hair out. If he wants to go to the EPL he’s got to be better. It’s one match after a two month layoff with group of guys who were out of it today, but not tracking runners and needless turnovers are nothing new.
One thing that gets over looked when I said Mckennie had a great game was he was covering for players who were awful, so it might.make him look out of position or not tracking back but he was all over the field. Blame him if u want but he couldn’t do it all and only what he had to work with.
McKennie had a 6.7 rating on whoscored, the best on his team. Of course it was also worse than all starters for BvB.
McKennie being the best player on his team today is not saying much, and it certainly doesn’t mean he played great. The problem with the giveaways is they happen too often, and it’s the side of his game that he has to correct if he wants to be who “we” think he can be! This is by no means me diminishing him, as I think he is a good player that can be great, but I’m not about to sugar coat an average performance as great like many fans do for certain players
There was bound to be rust on players after such a long delay between competitive matches. The quality of BvB’s players just exposed the flaws & rust in Shaulke’s team to a greater extent.
McKennie may not have had the greatest game….but he is still a major contributor for his club and for the USMNT. Considering he’s still only 21 he’ll have ample opportunity to improve his individual skills.
People need to realize that the USMNT extremely young & inexperienced and that they are going to go through growing pains as players and as a team. The majority of the Core players for our young team is under 23 yrs of age…..McKennie (21), Adams (21), Pulisic (21), Dest (19), Cannon (21), Yedlin (26), Brooks (27), Steffen (25). And most of the players we’ll be fitting around them (Sargent, Reyna, Llanez, Weah, Robinson, etc…) are of roughly the same age and have even less experience.
They are going to impress at times and are going to disappoint at others. What we have to hope for is more impressive games than disappointing.
Lost, I completely agree with everything you said, and again I waa at no.point diminishimg or tearing Weston down per my previous post, but we as fans have to stop anointing or over hyping performamces that dont warrant them! I along with most fans know Weatons potential upside and his importance to the NT, I alao understamd that it will take aeceral gamea for players to reach their top end again after such a long layoff, but we alao have to be real about there needing to be more of a progression from our younger players as well as nome of them have made it yet(Pulisic is the closest to that level)
