Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Novakovich, Gall, and more

Andrija Novakovich kept Serie B side Frosinone in the mix for a playoff promotion place after scoring in this weekend’s clash at Pescara.

The U.S. Men’s National Team prospect made an immediate impact on Friday, scoring four minutes after coming onto the pitch as a second-half substitute. After Pescara took the lead in first-half stoppage time, Novakovich earned his side a point after scoring his fourth league goal of the season. The 23-year-old made his 30th league appearance of the season, helping his side remain five points clear of ninth place Empoli. Frosinone has three matches remaining this season, but look likely to feature in the Serie B promotion playoffs later this summer.

Romain Gall played 39 minutes off the bench for Norwegian side Stabaek on Sunday, registering one assist in a 3-1 win. The Malmo loanee has waited for a true chance to make an impact at his new club and did so this weekend. Stabaek’s win moved them to fifth in the Eliteserien table with 15 points from nine matches. For Gall, he will hope Sunday’s performance gives him a needed boost going forward.

Elsewhere, Christian Pulisic did not feature in Chelsea’s 3-1 FA Cup semifinal win over Manchester United due to a slight injury. Tim Ream and Fulham earned a massive home win over Sheffield United while Cameron Carter-Vickers and Luton Town defeated Hull City. Tyler Boyd also appeared in league play for Besiktas.

Incredible amounts of recent bias here in the MLS side. I’m sure I forgot someone too.

      • I still don’t think Alvarado makes my list, if it was a must win and the only choice is Alvarado and Richards, I’d take Venturo but over the course of a qualifying cycle, no.

As soon as I hit “add” I went “wait Holmes”, I’d slide him into the AM list ahead of Indy. Or ahead of Green as an 8, I don’t get 2Bundesliga matches so that’s probably more I’ve seen Duane a few times more recently.

  2. Just because Chelsea said he was injured, was he really injured? It seems ppl are getting excited for nothing. Perhaps it was a planned rest from the beginning. It was labeled a slight injury just so the press wouldn’t keep asking why he didn’t play.

  3. Especially Chelsea is playing Liverpool for the all important 3 & 4th spots for Champions League on Wednesday with 2 days rest. We wanna keep Pulisic fresh. Mason Mount didn’t play a minute against Norwich the last game.

  4. Barca B matches have been on replay on Barca’s YouTube channel not sure if these playoff matches will be. First goal was just staying with it and knocking in his own rebound, and goal was a beauty driving into the box and curling a shot around a defender into the upper corner.

    • I shouldn’t try to describe goals off clips on my phone. First goal ball bounced off defender saved off the line by the keeper Konrad buried the rebound. 2nd one overlapping run layed back to him first times it, really nice goal. Highlights on YouTube if you search Barca B vs Vallodolid. Just need to win quarters and semi-final to gain promotion. Barca B’s top two LWs are both out with injury De la Fuente making the most of his opportunity.

  5. It’s starting to feel like CP will be in and out of the lineup with Chelsea going forward because of injury problems. It started to become a thing at the end of his Dortmund career and ow we’re seeing it again with the Blues…here’s to hoping that’s not the case!

    • He’d played in 8 straight matches in under a month. Once they got up 3-0 it was rest the starter time so on came Pedro, Odoi, and Loftus Cheek.

      • Lampard said before the match he was available as a sub just didn’t think he could go starters minutes.

    • I voiced concern that he was getting too many minutes, so this time off is a good thing. As it turned out they didn’t need him. Even about 3 games ago one of the commentators said that CP 22 had scored more goals than any other EPL player of 21 (his age) or younger and I think he’s added 3 goals since. Just looked, he is the 3rd highest scorer on the team with 9 behind Abraham with 16 and William with 11. On a goal per minute basis, he’s 4th on the team. He’ll continue to play regularly as long as he’s healthy.

      • The time off was definitely a good thing, but that stil doesn’t take away from the fact he’s injury prone like a lot of our younger players. There are players who play that many games in a row and never get injured so….he has to build up more core strength to prevent such issues and him being slightly built doesn’t help either!
