Europa League headlines This Week’s Soccer on TV

European action is back this week as the UEFA Europa League picks back up in the knockout round.

One team who will not be worried about the layoff is Manchester United. After earning a five-goal lead in the first leg back on March 12th, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his men will look to finish off Austrian side LASK on Wednesday and move towards collecting the first European trophy for the team since 2017.

Dubbed “the richest game in football”, Tuesday will see the final spot claimed in regards to Premier League promotion. It is down to Brentford playing for its first-ever Premier League appearance and Fullham looking to shake off last year’s relegation campaign quickly.

  1. On a similar yet different note….Bundesliga is moving to ESPN. Does anyone know if it is ESPN+ primarily, with the odd game on ESPN/ESPN 2? I’m trying to so decide if I should bite the bullet and pay for ESPN+. I wasn’t willing to pay just for Serie A but now I have to re-think….

    • The original press releases say four games per year on regular networks with every match on ESPN+. They will also have at least some maybe all 2Bundesliga and the Pokal matches.

      • Four games a year on actual TV?! If true, that’s unconscionable, when they have so many channels available and so much other utterly useless content like talk shows.

It’s sickening to think that just when more young Americans are getting more opportunities to play in the league, American TV is actually cutting back sharply on coverage. If they were looking for a way to discourage soccer viewership in the US, they seem to have found it. (Airing meaningless Serie A games, with never any of the top teams and no American players, was also a good start.)
        .
I will absolutely not be streaming, since I don’t want to hand any other corporate behemoths cheap access to my devices and information. I hope others will also resist. If the league and the network want viewers, they need to show their support for the sport by making it more accessible, not less. Nobody “must” do anything; we can all boycott.

At least UniMás and Galavisión seem to be airing the Europa League. Maybe it’s time for more of us to support them instead.

    • Maybe it”s me or something with my system, but when I try to connect with ESPN+, I have run into problems. The last time I tried (Chelsea vs. Arsenal FA Cup final) I clicked on Log In and no log in entry appeared. I tried all sorts of different things and re-tried several times to go onto their site from different ways and finally gave up after half an hour. When I clicked on help they told me there were 43 people ahead of me, so I forgot about it. I have been able to watch in the past, but had to jump through a lot of hoops and it was a lot of trouble that took quite a while.

  2. I am curious what MLS’ plans are beyond this tournament. It struck me odd that one runs MLS Is Back and then goes this deep into the event without releasing their future plans to keep the momentum going. In a week the tournament is over, and what next? One wonders whether the future is in the bubble or outside, immediate or delayed into the fall. It occurred to me that with baseball and hoops back going, and NFL imminent (plus racing and the rest), the empty TV sports landscape into which MLS Is Back stepped has rapidly filled. That we might even be encouraged to wait a few weeks. This would likely cause a very short season — not many games to play between Labor Day and October 15 — or perhaps we’d push the season deeper into the winter than usual, to get back some more games. But in any case I’m a little mystified why a league proclaiming it is Back has no plans to the public when the tournament is nearly done. Maybe when Dallas and Nashville got sick and dropped out they lost their nerve.

    • Last week the plan was said to be about ready for release then you had the Marlins and Cardinals outbreaks and LA Galaxy II have an outbreak. Prior to that the sticking point was the three Canadian teams getting teams in and out. At one point last week rumor was FC Dallas and Nashville would play this coming Friday in Frisco. Luchi even made a comment about getting ready for next Friday in a presser. I believe the start date was Aug. 23 for in market matches.

    • Wash. Post reporting FCD vs Nashville Aug. 12-15 in Frisco, to make up 2 of the three. I would assume everyone else starting the next weekend.
