UEFA Champions League quarterfinals headline This Week’s Soccer on TV

With plenty of time to extend its best ever recorded season, Atalanta has perhaps the biggest game in its’ 112-year history when it squares off with Paris Saint-Germain in a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday.

After Ligue 1 cancelled the remainder of the season in March, PSG has stayed busy with the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue Finals where it took both honors.

Like Atalanta, RB Leipzig is looking to write an underdog story at this juncture in the fight for the top prize in Europe. Without the services of star-striker Timo Werner who recently departed for Chelsea, it will be looking for a way to outfox Atlético Madrid on Thursday.

It is the time of year when managerial heads will roll at some of the biggest clubs if they can’t find a way to add to the trophy cabinet, or even lesser reasons. Evidenced by Juventus’ knee-jerk sacking of Maurizio Sarri on the heels of getting bounced from UCL.

Without a league or cup title to their names in 2020, it will be interesting to see how Ole Gunnar Solskaer and Antonio Conte stick the landing in Manchester United and Inter Milan’s Europa League bids, which play out at the quarterfinal stage on Monday.

Darlings of the MLS is Back tournament Orlando City will look to cap off a surprisingly successful restart against in the tournament’s conclusion against Portland Timbers on Tuesday. The regular reason also begins its restart with FC Dallas and Nashville SC playing the first of three makeup games for missing the tournament on Wednesday.

  1. I’m proud of MLS for having achieved and conquered bubbling in the MLS Is Back tournament, and I wish them well going forward, though I miss the FC Dallas games that used to be available through a network of local stations. Streaming and its utter loss of privacy is no substitute.
    .
I do worry about clubs like Dallas that, as their coach has noted, may have many younger players, often Hispanic, living in multigenerational households that include essential workers who have to go out into the storm every day. Latinos are being hit hard by this disease precisely because they tend to have such close, interconnected families. MLS has used that as a recruitment tool in recent years, offering a more stable and less corrupt environment for player development than Latin America. It would be a shame if the US were no longer seen as a safer and healthier place.
    .
I think US sports networks, and by extension the US soccer federation to whatever extent it might have any influence, are making a HUGE mistake in allowing huge international tournaments like the Champions League to be sidelined onto obscure channels no one has ever heard of, like CBSSN, which isn’t even on standard cable in my area. Talk about shooting themselves, and the sport, in the foot by making soccer that much harder to watch on TV …
    .
Viewers may wish to note that the Leipzig – Atleti game on Thursday will be shown on UniMás, and the Barça – Bayern game on Friday will be shown on Univisión. Both over the air in many metropolitan areas.
    .
There are so many potential soccer fans in the US who could be cultivated by simply showing them more exciting top-level games. But noooo, we want to make it _harder_ for them to watch good soccer.
    .
    It boggles belief.
