Besiktas picked up an opening day with in Turkey on Sunday with U.S. Men’s National Team winger Tyler Boyd playing a vital role in the victory.

Boyd opened his scoring account for the season, helping Besiktas to a 3-1 road win over fellow rivals Trabzonspor. The winger only needed 20 minutes to score his opening goal of the new campaign, beating Ugurcan Cakir to the top-right corner. After creating space for a shot outside of the box, Boyd ripped an effort past Cakir and celebrated his first goal since July 9th.

The 25-year-old also won one duel and completed 75% of his passes, playing 81 minutes before being substituted. Besiktas added a pair of second-half goals to end up 3-1 winners on the afternoon. Up next for Boyd and Co. is a home date with Antalyaspor.

Haji Wright also scored his first goal in his debut for Danish side Sonderjyske, helping them knock off defending champions Midtjylland, 2-0, at home. The striker did not start the match, but came off the bench and padded the victory with a cool finish in stoppage time. After holding off a Midtjylland defender, Wright lifted a shot past Jesper Hansen to cap off an opening day win for the hosts. Sonderjyske next travels to Vejle Boldklub on Sept. 20th.

Sergino Dest also helped Ajax to a 1-0 opening day with over Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday, appearing off the bench. Dest came on minutes after Ajax starting right back Nicolas Tagliafico was sent off and helped Ajax pick up an important win to start its season. Dest will next look to start on Sept. 20th against RKC Waalwijk.

  1. He and Mazraoui traded off the starting role last season. Mazraoui was hurt a couple times last year that helped Dest get more time. Sergino had a minor ankle injury that held him out a little which probably didn’t help his cause. Given their full schedule he’ll play a lot even if he isn’t the first choice starter.

  2. what’s going on with Dest? I’m kind of guessing he was on the bench given a departure from Ajax is imminent, but then again haven’t heard anything other than a rumors and here we are with the seasons kicking off.

  3. Good to see Wright score, it’s been a long time since his last one. Let’s hope this gives him confidence and he continues to improve.

    • Last professional goal Oct. 30 in the Dutch Cup vs 4th Div side Groene Star (missed the final pk in VVV loss). Haji has never had more than one professional goal in a season. Schalke 1g, Sandhausen 1g, VVV 1g, Sonderjyske 1g. He’s never had trouble in the youth ranks (15g for Schalke U19, 14g for Schalke II, 5g in 6 matches for VVV U21). Haji is a debut warrior scored in his debut for Schalke U19s, Sandhausen, Schalke II, and now Sonderjyske, he assisted in his debut for VVV. It took him four matches to score for Schalke.

  4. 24 year old Georgia native Joseph Effords registered his 2nd assist of the season in a 4-1 loss to Club Brugge. Joe has 1g 2a in 4 appearances for Waasland-Beveren this season. He’s been in the Greek lower divisions, he certainly looks the part, he’s got size and athleticism, seems to have good timing on his runs (hard to really know though from highlight videos). He’s on a pretty bad team but credit to him for getting into a decent league and being successful straight away. Eastdeflection has been on this guy for awhile. He can play CF or W. More depth never hurts.

  5. Overall a good kick-off of the European Season for Yanks:
    Goals Scored –
Sargent, Green, Boyd, Johannson, De La Torre,

Only drawbacks were that a couple of our most notable players didn’t dress or make it off the bench (Yedlin, Brooks, Robinson, Uli, etc…)

    • De la Torre was actually an assist, he flubbed his shot but a teammate stabbed it home.
      ——————————————
Not sure about Brooks but given he’s injury prone and they were playing a 4th division side might just have been to keep him healthy.
      ————————————
I’ve heard the Uly loan to Heerenveen is essentially done so he wouldn’t have played and risked injury if that’s true, and as I said the Wolfsburg manager has almost completely refused to play anyone under 21 the last two seasons.
      —————————————
A.Robinson was expected to be the replacement for Joe Bryan who was thought to be headed to Leicester to replace Chilwell. The manager said they’re aren’t selling Bryan and that Robinson was brought in to push not replace. That being said to not even dress suggests some sort of minor injury since nothing was reported.
      ——————————————
Yedlin leaving also seems back on this week so likely won’t see him until a deal is done or the transfer window closes. Same for Miazga and CCV.
      —————————————
On the good Wes started with Ronaldo in Juve’s friendly, and Cannon started for Boavista and scored in their final tune up so there melding in with their new clubs.

      • I get Brooks due to the fact it’s the DBK Polka 1st round.
If Uli is headed out on Loan…I’m fine with him not playing. If he isn’t going to be loaned than it doubly disappointing.
CCV, Miazga, & Yedlin loans are all expected and understandable. Just hope they land somewhere they’ll get consistent playing time.
        A. Robinson was always going to take a little time to adjust. I expect he’ll see minutes in the FA Cup and be used when the schedule get congested.
McKennie & Cannon settling in is a very good sign. Hopefully both will see consistent minutes this season. A strong season from both will help push the USMNT player pool.
