Report: Besiktas interested in DeAndre Yedlin

DeAndre Yedlin’s days at Newcastle United appear to be numbered, and a new potential suitor has emerged which could give Yedlin an opportunity for a fresh start in a new league.

Turkish powerhouse Besiktas is interested in signing the U.S. Men’s National Team defender, according to a report in Turkish outlet Orta Cizgi.

The report comes as Newcastle is faced with a decision on whether to keep Yedlin or try to unload him as heads into the final year of his contract and isn’t expected to be a part of the team’s plans. Newcastle is already weighing up other options at the right back position on the transfer market.

Yedlin fell out of favor last season, playing just 16 matches, his lowest total in a season since his first season in England after joining Tottenham from the Seattle Sounders.

The 27-year-old fullback will be eager to make a move in search of playing time as he tries to maintain his place with the USMNT. Yedlin has not featured as a starter under current coach Gregg Berhalter, who has preferred Reggie Cannon and Sergino Dest as his top options at right back.

If Yedlin joined Besiktas, he would join USMNT teammate Tyler Boyd on the squad, as well as Canadian National Team veteran Atiba Hutchinson.

  1. Boy, for someone claiming they don’t want to come back to the United States because of social issues: Turkey would be quite the interesting move.

Look forward to him being outspoken about social, and ethnic issues in that open-minded and free speech-welcomed country.

  2. Does anyone know what happened here? It seemed like Yedlin was a quality EPL back. Has his form dipped so much he was unable to stay in the league?

    • I can’t remember which player it was, but I recall another time with another team when Bruce came in and an American saw his time on the field reduced drastically. I don’t know that Bruce is prejudiced against Americans or if that is a coincidence, but Bruce replacing Benitez seems to be the big difference for Yedlin. He definitely needs to go somewhere else.

      • GP – I tend to agree that “old-school” english coaches appear to have a tendency to avoid the American player. I think Dempsey faced this at Fulham and Tottenham (Mark Hughes in particular) – just my opinion. Yedlin is not a blood and guts defender and that is what Bruce was as a player and what he has looked for in his defenders while he has moved from relegation battles in the EPL to promotion battles in the Championship. If Bruce is concerned about Yedlin – who is pretty short for an EPL defender – because he has been hurt and cannot use his speed, then Bruce will have little use for him. I have to think that another EPL club could use Yedlin; crap how many relegation battlers could use a speedy outside defender – all of them? Maybe Yedlin needs to go somewhere else – but, Turkey?
