Cameron Carter-Vickers excelled on loan from Tottenham last season and is reportedly on the watchlist for a current EFL Championship side.
AFC Bournemouth have submitted a bid for the U.S. Men’s National Team centerback, several outlets from England reported Tuesday. The South Coast club is looking to add him on loan if a permanent transfer isn’t agreed upon with Tottenham.
Carter-Vickers has yet to make his senior debut for Spurs, but has featured in all four preseason matches this summer under Jose Mourinho. He recently spent the 2019-20′ season on loan with both Stoke City and Luton Town, helping the latter fight off relegation from England’s second-tier.
The 22-year-old is in the final season of his contract and has been linked with a move away from the club throughout the summer. Carter-Vickers has totaled 103 domestic appearances in his five loans away from Tottenham to date, scoring one goal and adding one assist.
He’s appeared for Sheffield United, Swansea City, Ipswich Town, Stoke City, and Luton Town in his loans. Carter-Vickers has earned eight caps to date with the USMNT, last appearing in June 2019.
Bournemouth suffered relegation from the Premier League last season, which also saw manager Eddie Howe replaced by Jason Tindall. The club has seen several starters leave the club this summer including centerback Nathan Ake (Manchester City), striker Callum Wilson (Newcastle United), goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale (Sheffield United) and winger Ryan Fraser (Newcastle United).
The Summer Transfer Window is set to close on Oct. 16th with Bournemouth aiming to get a deal done before the start of the new EFL Championship season.
At 22 years old, being a starter in a Championship club that will be fighting to return to the top flight is a much better position for CCV than laboring on the bench at Tottenham. The Championship is a high standard of play, and more importantly to me this transfer would put him in A. position to help stamp his own ticket into a premiership side via promotion or B. A great opportunity to set himself up for success at another club in the future. He’s already racked up a ton of experience in English football, and at his age and with his physical gifts his continued development and value showcasing will certainly bring other clubs in for him. The mid-table, low-tier Premiership clubs are always looking for strong, athletic defenders that can move the ball quickly and maintain possession. It’s been easy to forget about CCV, but I think this is a big year for him.
The people who forget about CCV tend to be the sorts more concerned with your address and your reputation than with your actual results. Vickers started the France tie and the Mexico win in 2018. Those are the results I want repeated. I think it’s in our best interests to get him a solid permanent home where GB has one less excuse. I generally agree with your hypothesis for over-20 players — once you are a first team dude and not an age group prospect, getting someplace where you get minutes outweighs signing name brand for a paycheck and then a loan back out.
Let’s not mince words about what CCV has been. He’s been a loanee for 3 straight seasons from Tottenham, and maybe thru not fault of his own, but a loanee nonetheless. He has had good moments and not great ones on his loan stints but more recently they have been good. CCV has never been the best passer out of the back, though that seems to be getting better, but this idea that he’s been overlooked is ridiculous. Overlooked for who? Speakingof the France and Mexico friendlies, he was at fault for the Mbappe goal and that Mexican team could never be construed as their first choice team, but neither could ours fortunately, but I wouldn’t call that appearance one for the record books either. CCV I believe will continue to develop and be a good player, but he has to get with a team that wants him for the future and stop it with these loans!
Which is more fair looking at two results, or three years of league seasons with over 100 matches? He’s had his loan terminated early twice, which once could just be a bad fit twice is becoming a pattern. The other troubling item is he seems to continue to make the same mistakes. If he never gets any better he’ll still have a long career in the Championship which is nothing to sneeze at. I actually don’t think it would be bad to spend the next couple of months on the bench for Spurs to learn under Mourinho and make a Jan transfer to set up him up for the next stage of his career.
Yeah, there’s not a lot of grounds for any assertion that he’s been overlooked for national team consideration. Some American fans might just due to the fact that they don’t get to watch a lot of Luton Town matches, but the loans have been successful for him – 100+ English football appearances by the age of 22. Now it’s time for the next step, which to me means distinguishing himself as one of the top players at his position within the tier he plays. Very bullish on CCV.
