Reyna scores first Bundesliga goal for Borussia Dortmund

22 Shares

Giovanni Reyna put in a strong preseason with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and that looks to have carried over into domestic play.

Reyna scored his first league goal for Lucien Favre’s side while also drawing a penalty in his first start of the new season. The 17-year-old broke the deadlock on Saturday against rivals Borussia Monchengladbach before halftime after a confident finish into the bottom corner.

Jude Bellingham showed great composure in the box before providing Reyna with a pass. The U.S. Men’s National Team forward ripped a low drive past Yann Sommer for the opening goal of the match.

It was Reyna’s second goal for Dortmund since joining the first team in January.

Reyna’s strong afternoon wasn’t finished though as the young forward drew a penalty kick opportunity in the 50th minute. Ramy Bensebaini brought down Reyna in the box, allowing Erling Haaland to add to Dortmund’s advantage from the penalty spot.

Dortmund currently leads Gladbach 2-0 at Signal Iduna Park with minimal fans inside the stadium. It will be a strong opening day win for the Black and Yellow, who aim to fight for the league title once again this season.

    • Lille is limiting his minutes right now to prevent re-injury. Yes projecting Weah into the lineup is speculation but it’s also based on his performances in 2019 for Celtic, US U20s, and in preseason for Lille. That’s far from a sure thing but is much different than picking someone based on 3g and 3a against Cuba.

  1. Bringing up formation questions for Berhalter. Does he stick with the 4-3-3 with CP and Reyna in those inverted winger roles like CP plays at Chelsea staying really inside the width of the box. Does he shirt to a 4-2-3-1 with Reyna directly under the striker and CP and Morris(Weah) wide. Maybe least likely Favre’s 3-4-1-2 with Dest and perhaps Chandler in midfield with Adams and Wes in a dual six and CP playing as an offset FW next to Altidore/Zardes/orSargent and Reyna as a #10.

    • Favre’s 3-4-1-2 could work really well for the USMNT, but agree it’s unlikely…
      2 = Sargent & Pulisic (Morris, Weah)
      1 = Reyna (Arronson/Ledezma)
      4 = A Robinson, McKennie, Adams, Dest
      3 = Ream/CCV, Brooks, Miazga/Long

    • I don’t think Gregg is going to change his formation all that much. He’ll either stick with the 4-3-3 with Pulisic & Reyna as the wide attackers, or he’ll go back to his 4-1-4-1 formation with Adams as the CDM and Weston & Aaronson as the CMs.

    • As far as the 3 CB formation goes, I’ll echo what they talked about on the scuffed podcast last week. If you add a CB that means your taking off an attacking player, so do you want to remove Morris or Weah to play Miazga?

      I don’t think Aaronson has progressed past Morris or Reyna so to start him next to Wes would take off one of those two. I’m still not convinced 3G won’t play Wes and Tyler as 8s and we just won’t let people get past midfield.

  2. Wasting no time, nicely done. Technically he’s not yet a USMNT player since he has yet to play for more than the youth teams. Is he now the youngest American to score in a top 5 league? He must be.
