Roma-Juventus headlines This Weekend’s Soccer on TV

The new Serie A season rolls on this weekend with two historic rivals meeting at the San Siro on Sunday afternoon.

AS Roma welcomes defending champions Juventus to town looking to pull off a major upset on Matchday 2. Roma lost 3-0 to Hellas Verona on opening day and will need to put in a much better performance if they want to knock off the expected favorites.

Weston McKennie made his Juventus debut in a 3-0 win over Sampdoria last weekend which saw three of his teammates all get on the scoresheet. The team split last season’s league meetings with Juve also edging Roma in Coppa Italia play.

Premier League play continues in England with Liverpool’s date with Arsenal on Monday the headlining match. Both clubs have won its opening league matches and will be eager to make it three-in-a-row.

Manchester City also faces a tough test this weekend against Leicester City, who currently lead the EPL table on goal difference. The Citizens defeated Wolves 3-1 on Monday and also advanced in the Carabao Cup after a 2-1 victory over lower league side Bournemouth.

The MLS regular season is also on display this weekend with 11 matches taking place on Sunday. The Seattle Sounders take a trip to the L.A. Galaxy with both teams looking to rebound from midweek losses while Toronto FC hosts Columbus Crew in Connecticut due to COVID-19 protocols.

  1. The headline here schould be soccer schedule behind online paywall…
    Greedy ESPN, NBC and CBS.
Back to the dark ages of almost no football on TV.

Regarding Champions League, Univision networks are showing the games. No need to fill up the coffers of CBS.

Bundesliga is dead for US viewers, out of sight, out of mind. Gone.

Find alternative ways to watch those games, folks! Don’t pay the greedy corporations.

    • Before anyone gets too optimistic about soccer coverage in fall 2020, let’s look at the coming week.
      .
      Mon Sept 28
Liverpool-Arsenal (EPL) — not televised; withheld in favor of car auctions (!) and poker (!)
      .
      Tues Sept 29
Tottenham-Chelsea (League Cup) — not televised; withheld in favor of “the latest in sports and pop culture” or “highlights and analysis” (read: garbage filler airtime)
      .
      Wed Sept 30
Mexico-Guatemala friendly — Univisión (if it even takes place)
      .
      Thu Oct 1
Liverpool-Arsenal (League Cup) — not televised; withheld in favor of baseball and “TBA,” i.e., they have nothing else to offer (!!!)
      .
      Sat Oct 3
      Leeds-Man City — NBC
zero other EPL games televised; all withheld in favor of luge, skiing, figure skating (!!!???)
      e.g. Chelsea-Palace
“No channels found. Is this game on TV in United States?”
      Stuttgart-Leverkusen
      Bayern-Schalke
Not televised; withheld in favor of “College Game Day” and “Sports Center,” then S. Carolina-Florida and Arkansas State–Coastal Carolina.
WTF???!!! Has anyone ever even heard of “Coastal Carolina”?
      .
It seems to me that it’s high time for soccer fans to speak up, when commercial networks are determined to stab them in the back.

  2. 7 EPL games this weekend are being shown. 6 on NBCSN and only one being streamed on Peacock. Maybe last weekend when NBC was streaming most games was an anomaly; NBC was televising the U.S. Open and the last two stages of the Tour de France, so they took priority over EPL league games.
Still screwed with the Bundesliga, though. Not a single game is being shown on TV, everything is being streamed.

Yes, NBC is better this week, 6 of 10 games — _except_ for Liverpool-Arsenal on Monday, which is a massive exception. I take your point about the US Open and the Tour de France, but that game is evidently being withheld in favor of car auctions and poker, those pinnacles of athletic achievement.
      .
      Roma-Juventus, also missing in action.
      .
MLS games — apparently the only one all weekend is on Univisión. (Remember, it does have English on the second audio channel. Worth supporting — send them a tweet, they do sometimes respond on air.)
      .
And yes, the Bundesliga is still evidently determined not to be seen at all in the US, after acquiring several US players. Mind-boggling, especially after the network also hired Derek Rae, who is really good and knowledgeable, and even featured an article about him — but then they don’t care enough to put him on TV.
      .
It just bothers me that they don’t seem to distinguish between MLS and key European games on the one hand, and USL, Scandinavia, NCAA etc. on the other hand. Surely there’s a place for streaming, but to serve smaller on-demand niche markets with inherently fragmented audiences, not the top national league and the top international games.
      .
I keep coming back to how they think they’re ever going to grow their soccer audience if they’re not even willing to feature the best of the sport on their best channels. And all those young soccer players from families who may not even have broadband or laptops, much less the extra cash this year to add frivolous new subscriptions.
      .
ABC/ESPN do seem to have planned for fairly generous actual airtime to show Euro 2020 in summer 2021. Maybe that will redeem them to some extent, if we can wait till then.

      • Regarding Bundesliga and ESPN, I think the league just sells its rights to the highest bidder and then the winner of that decides how to broadcast those games. ESPN had the gall to proudly announce that THE BUNDESLIGA IS ON ESPN recently, during broadcast of some MLS Is Back tournament half times and post game shows. Yeah, the Bundesliga is on ESPN+ if you want to pay for streaming.I did do that and found that the quality and access leave much to be desired. The one good thing is it is only $5 per month and you do get access to a lot of sports. Still, I’d prefer a slate of games on regular ESPN or ESPN2.
