The UEFA Super Cup headlines this week’s Soccer on TV schedule with Bayern Munich and Sevilla both looking to earn their first trophy of the new season.
Bayern is coming off an 8-0 romp of Schalke in its Bundesliga opener while Sevilla has yet to kick off its league schedule. Robert Lewandowski and Lucas Ocampos headline the long list of talented attackers that will grace the field in Budapest.
The Carabao Cup continues this week with Leicester City’s clash with Arsenal the headlining match of the third round. Both clubs have picked up wins in its opening two league matches, but will find this as the toughest test so far.
Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool all face possible upsets against lower league competition.
Jesse Marsch has a pair of big games on his hands with Red Bull Salzburg in the near future. Leg one of the UEFA Champions League qualification playoff begins on Tuesday, as the Austrian Bundesliga side faces Israeli side Meccabi Tel Aviv.
A Cascadia Cup match between the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders headlines a 13-match MLS slate on Wednesday, and will have a big impact on the Western Conference title picture as Portland is one of several teams within three points of leaders Seattle.

Putting all soccer content behind a paywall isn’t going to work for these networks. The sooner they realize that, the better it’ll be for everyone.
I’m not really sure what’s the difference paying a few bucks a month for ESPN+ or Peacock and having to buy some sports add on to get BEin. Short of going to their Covid Summer schedule when games are spread out over the week how are you going to air all of the matches from a league on a cable network? You’re still paying for your cable channels it’s just not divided out by channel.
They’re over complicating it! I have HULU, Spectrum Sports, CBS all access, ESPN plus, peacock and univision now. It’s so hard to follow what’s on what. I’ll keep paying but feel the casual follower won’t. This will backfire

I cannot believe you are brushing this off so cavalierly, as if it were not a massive slap in the face to the entire US soccer community and TV viewing audience. If they had deliberately chosen to slash soccer viewership in the US and set back appreciation of the game by two decades or more, they couldn’t have found a better way than to make it HARDER to watch the vast majority of games.

It’s a HUGE difference, when last year most weekends on actual TV (standard cable, not premium) you could get four or five Premier League games, two or three Bundesliga games, two or three MLS games, and a lot of Liga MX, however blah.

This year you apparently get only a measly one to two Premier League games per week, and besides, many of the best matchups (Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool) are being deliberately withheld from fans! They even show previews when they aren’t going to show the game, like na-na-na-na-na, we have this but you can’t have it.

That’s really as mean, as cruel, as you can get, especially when you think about all the young soccer players from modest or working-class families, whose parents are very rightly not going to subscribe to every stupid streaming service that comes down the pike, when it’s already hard just to put food on the table this year. And what about pubs and sports bars, are they going to have to buy special multiple subscriptions? Not that anyone ought to be going out this year anyway.

And for the Bundesliga, one pathetic game per quarter (probably *yawn* Bayern), if early reports of only four broadcasts per year are true. That’s really pitifully sad. Just when American players seemed to be breaking into the league and things seemed to be getting interesting, great, stop broadcasting it altogether! Because of course, the network refused all this genuine sports content because it **needed a time slot instead for a three-hour radio (!) talk show,** with no actual sports programming at all, much less the sport that is THE most popular in the entire rest of the world. Noooooo, here in the US we have to save our precious TV time for … wait for it … talk radio! … and NASCAR … and softball.

But the least any of you can do is to speak up and acknowledge that this corporate network emperor is naked as a jaybird.

And flatly refuse to sign up for streaming, which is after all only giving them cheap access to your personal data and a cheap opportunity to feed you ads as if by gastric tube.

There are some things that are more important than soccer, and this is one of them. If my time of enjoying soccer is past, so be it.

PPS: The glaring omission from the above list, which could much more usefully have been divided into streaming (useless) vs. actual TV (scarce), is that the Bayern-Sevilla game on Thursday is going to be shown on Univisión (over the air, network TV).

Sure, it’s an artificial, commercially invented “trophy.” But it could still be a good game, and an increasingly rare chance to see top-quality international play. Next year, we may not even have this.
