Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Novakovich, Johannsson, and more

Frosinone continued its good run of form this weekend with a 2-0 win over fellow promotion hopefuls Pescara while Andrija Novakovich excelled in attack for the Serie B side.

Novakovich scored once and assisted once in the victory, a result that moved Frosinone up to fourth place. The American forward linked up with Camillo Ciano in the sixth minute to break the deadlock and give the visitors an early advantage. After setting up the opening goal, Novakovich scored his second goal of the new season, icing the win in the 50th minute. Ciano sent a cross into the box and the Wisconsin native headed home to put Frosinone in cruise control for the final 40 minutes. Frosinone next hosts Cremonese on Nov. 1st in league action.

Aron Johannsson continued his impressive season in Sweden, scoring his 10th league goal for Hammarby in a 3-1 road victory over Ostersunds on Sunday. Johannsson played 90 minutes in attack, scoring once and competing 75% of his passes, helping his team extend its unbeaten run to four matches.

Haji Wright also found the back of the net in league play for Danish club Sonderjyske in a 2-1 road win over Randers. Wright now has five goals in five matches since joining the club this summer as a free agent. Anders Jacobsen connected with Wright in the 42nd minute, before the American striker hit a high shot into the top of the goal for the winner. Sonderjyske leads the Superliagen table with 13 points from six matches while Wright is joint leading scorer in the league.

Elsewhere, Christian Pulisic started for Chelsea in a scoreless draw at Manchester United while Sergino Dest couldn’t help Barcelona avoid a El Clasico loss to Real Madrid. John Brooks started in Wolfsburg’s backline in a 2-1 home victory over Arminia Bielefeld while Julian Green and Emmanuel Sabbi both registered assists in league wins. 1. “Yosef Samuel, who has had his contract with the club revoked, is also said goodbye today. Yosef Samuel came to Hobro IK last summer on a two-year contract, but due to lack of playing time, it has been agreed to terminate his contract a year ahead of time.”

    • I’m hoping Weah gets loaned to the owner’s other club Boavista in January to play with Reggie. Lille just has too many Forwards.

  2. I am not having any luck with ESPN+. Even tho it’s cheap, I’m thinking of canceling it. This is a lead in to the Werder Bremen game which I was watching, despite fits and starts. After about 20 minutes or so the picture froze and then a notice appeared that they cannot show the video at this time(it was live). I continue to have trouble with their streaming. Anyway, I did see some positive signs from Sargent. He seemed very involved and did well when given the chance. One thing I liked was that he helped on defense and intercepted a pass at the top of his own box and then dribbled about 70 yards as he led the counter attack, passed and got the pass back, dribbled into the opponent’s box when he went to ground. On replay it looked like a penalty was not warranted (one wasn’t given), but it was a good play from him. He may not be a big goal scorer yet, but he is becoming more of a complete player, it looks to me.

    • I rarely have an issue with ESPN+ and I have pretty bad internet. I have an Amazon FireTv stick it might be different for different platforms.

I think the concern people have with Sargent is more he gets so little offensive service. I saw someone said he received more passes in his own box than the opponents. The concern is he’s not getting enough chances to improve because Bremen is so defensive. On the other hand someone pointed out if they kept getting results they won’t change the lineup so at least he won’t get benched.

  3. I will pick Soto because scored against strong under 20’s french team, Kevin Bacon as super-sub or withdraw forward, or Haji on bench. Issues 2014-2018 poor midfield control, can’t hold ball. But, attackers are far better now that 2014-2018.

  4. I think for right now I take Wright he’s gotten experience in several leagues and seems to have finally settled and is performing. I like Johannson but his injury issues are concerning. Definitely wouldn’t mind seeing Soto but not setting expectations too high just yet

    • I think we’ll see an expanded roster for this camp, espexially if there is only one game scheduled, more time to see more players and players who are playing well at that, maybe 25-26 players. With that said you’d have to think GB calls in Sargent, Johansson, Soto and Wrightiy

      • The good thing is if you assume 3G would use them the same as Morris both Wright and Johnannson could play wing.

  5. If you can only take two, who do you choose:
Haji Wright: League UEFA rank: 13, 5g in 6 matches, age 22.
Aron Johansson: League UEFA rank: 21, 10g in 12 matches, age 29 (30 in two weeks)
Sebastian Soto: League UEFA rank: ? (1st div 10), 5g in 6 matches, age 20.

Obviously Soto’s dual nationality complicates things. Also hard to judge Dutch 2nd against top flightsin Sweden and Denmark.

    • ArJo is RW, so I def select him. Haji Wright & Soto play better as CFs. For me, the question is Soto’s fitness, I’d have him in camp to see. You still have Nico, Sargent, & Super Nova. I like Wright as a player, but I don’t think he’s on GBs radar. My bad if your question was rhetorical!

      • No, I really wanted a debate. What makes it difficult is you have AJ, Soto, and Wright in great form. Nova perhaps coming on and you have Giaocchini who Berhalter has mentioned several times. I think Sargent has done enough in 2019 that he’s a lock on this all Euro roster. I believe Johansson only played RW at Bremen and has played either as the CF or underneath the CF during his current hot streak. Given how McKennie functioned in fall 2019 as the 10 with CP wide I could see Aron serving as a back up to Reyna in that role. I always think Nova has a role if we get down he’s certainly capable if we have to just hit hopeful balls but do you need that for a set of friendlies. I believe Giaocchini can play as a second striker as well. The worst part is it’s really hard to catch any of their games. I guess I’d go Soto to try to secure him and ArJo you might need veteran players on the road in Concacaf, Nico and Haji are Olympic eligible I think so keep them on that path. Nova keep in touch with.

      • I agree, with the fact, certain players are harder to keep up with then others. I think, we have a bunch of players, with versatility to play CAM, 2nd strikers, or wingers. For instance, I think Nova is ball-@-feet type of CF, meaning he needs service. Don’t get me wrong, Sargent needs service also, but he’s proven to put in work on the defensive side. Wright, Soto, Novakovich, & Giaocchini, we‘re patiently waiting to watch a USMNT feature. I hope there’s a second friendly, so we can see a lot of these guys healthy & on the pitch together.
