Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Sargent, Dest, and more

Werder Bremen has been one of the surprises of the young Bundesliga season, but Josh Sargent and his squad face their toughest test to date on Saturday against mighty Bayern Munich.

Sargent was not released for U.S. Men’s National Team duty by Bremen and should be in Florian Kohfeldt’s starting lineup this weekend. Sargent has helped Bremen to a 2-1-4 record so far in league play, scoring one goal and adding one assist in seven appearances. The 20-year-old should be fresh and ready to go after not being allowed to join Gregg Berhalter’s squad for matches against Wales and Panama. Sargent could also be opposed by fellow American Chris Richards, who made his USMNT debut in the team’s 6-2 win against Panama.

Elsewhere, Sergino Dest and Barcelona take on Atletico Madrid while Weston McKennie and Juventus face Cagliari. Duane Holmes and Derby County begin life without Phillip Cocu at the helm of the EFL Championship club. Haji Wright and Emmanuel Sabbi square off in Danish Superliagen action after both players missed out on USMNT call-ups.

  1. Wait a minute. How did Chris Richards, on a German team, get to play against Panama while Sargent couldnt. We were told that quarantine regulations prevented Sargent from playing???? Sounds like crap to me. What’s up with this? and since the game was in Austria…. not that far from Germany. GB has to start getting tough with these clubs and stop begging them

    Reply
    • Josh was prevented from travelling by the local government of Bremen- not the Federal government of Germany. Dozens of players throughout Germany were able to travel with their NTs but players in Bremen were not

      Reply
    • FIFA changed their regulations to add that clubs could deny call ups if players would have to quarantine upon return. Most teams still allowed players to leave Armenia Bielefeld, Hertha Berlin, and Stuttgart also denied players. Jesse Marsch’s RB Salzburg blocked call ups as well because of a Covid outbreak within the club.
