Lletget replaces Sargent on USMNT November roster

Sebastian Lletget has been added to the U.S. Men’s National Team for its upcoming November friendlies against Wales and Panama.

U.S. Soccer announced the roster move on Thursday, in which Lletget will replace Werder Bremen forward Josh Sargent on the squad. Sargent was not released by Bremen due to travel regulations, which would’ve seen the striker have to quarantine for five days upon arrival back into Germany.

Berhalter stated in his press conference Tuesday that MLS players were not included for the friendlies due to the Cup Playoffs kicking off just four days after the scheduled Panama friendly on November 20th. However, Lletget’s MLS season will end on Sunday as the L.A. Galaxy are already eliminated from playoff contention.

The 28-year-old midfielder scored six goals and added three assists for the Galaxy this season in 21 combined appearances. Lletget was one of the more impressive players for the Western Conference club this season, who fired its coach and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Lletget has earned 14 caps for the USMNT, scoring two goals. He will join his teammates in Cardiff ahead of a November 12th date with Wales at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea.

The USMNT will conclude its November schedule against Concacaf rivals Panama in Austria on the 16th.

  1. I might be mistaken, but I thought European players were being brought in because Wales’ travel restrictions force people traveling from “non-exempt” countries (like the United States) have to self-isolate for 14 days. Is the USMNT able to get these rules overturned? Or is he going to get a trip Wales and a 14 day stay at a hotel out of this deal?

    • I believe he gets special permission because he is regularly tested for MLS. I believe that many countries have that provision which is how UEFA is able to continue NL and Champions League.

      • Of course he was right, he should have played instead Gonzo in Couvo. But no, there is no reason to call him in.

    • Why he is inconsistent and playing in 2nd tier bottom of the league. Not a guarantee starter. Rather bring Henry Wingo although the case against wingo is that you have 2 RBs already.

      • The case against Wingo is he was bad for Sounders and only found success when he went to a far weaker league.

  2. Does this mean, we will see Soto, & Gioacchini @ the 9? With the roster, does GB need to call in anyone else? Even if CP isn’t a go, you have Llanez, & Reyna (who GB sees as a winger), as LWs and Ledezma & De La Fuente as RWs? I’m missing another player, I think. A lil lazy on this one. I didn’t feel looking up the roster then typing.

  3. Yeah, let’s bring a middle of the MLS pack mid from a low-half club instead of, you know, a European-based player scoring goals. What a nonsense call-up.

  4. I like Lletget, but I would rather see either Green or Haji Wright. Wright because he has been doing well in Denmark and we should see if that will translate to the national team and Green because I think he is better than LLetget and Berhalter has ignored him, for some reason.

    • That 8 forwards were chosen and 6 midfielders might indicate they knew that Sargent was questionable and that Lletget was the backup if LAG was eliminated. I would imagine there is another player set if Pulisic is not fit this weekend, perhaps that is Green or Wright. I know Furth is on the other side of the country but perhaps they also have stricter quarantine rules.

  5. Shows me that GB hasn’t learned anything during this extended time off. Sebastian Lletget is not international quality and no matter how many times GB rolls him out… he never will be. A wasted spot for somebody. We are still screwed with him at the helm

      • IMO Lletget is good enough for any team in CONCACAF with the possible exception of Mexico and also good enough for lesser European teams, of which Wales would be one. I think he is one of the more skilled Americans playing in MLS. While he never b broke through at West Ham, I think he picked up a lot of skill while there.
