Brenden Aaronson wasted little time in his first competitive start for Red Bull Salzburg, assisting once in a league win on Wednesday.
Aaronson got the nod in Jesse Marsch’s starting lineup and delivered the opening assist in an eventual 3-0 win over Ried. It was Aaronson’s second league appearance of the season, but his first start for the Austrian Bundesliga giants after arriving from the Philadelphia Union.
The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder needed only 15 minutes to make an impact. Aaronson cut back onto his left foot before setting up Rasmus Kristensen for the opening goal of the match.

Aaronson watched as Sekou Keita and Patson Daka both added goals later in the half for a 3-0 lead for the hosts. The Medford, New Jersey native only played 63 minutes for Salzburg in the victory, but showed promising moments from his attacking midfield position.
He made five recoveries, completed one tackle, and successfully completed one dribble prior to being subbed off after the hour mark. Red Bull Salzburg would make it back-to-back league wins since returning to domestic action, now moving one point clear of second place Rapid Wien.
“We played really well, and you could see our playing philosophy really clearly on the pitch, especially in the first half,” Marsch said post match. “We can always score goals as we have very good talents in attack. We also showed today that we can keep a clean sheet. The players are also determined to do that, which is a good sign for us.”
Aaronson and Salzburg’s busy schedule continues with Saturday’s league match at Hartberg before an Austrian Cup quarterfinal date with Austria Wien next week.
Good for Aronson. Here’s my question. If he continues to do well there and is given consideration for the USMNT, why isn’t more consideration given to Palmer Brown who has been a regular starter for almost 2 seasons on the second place team in the same league for?
Wrong Vienna club, Brown plays for Austria Wein who are usually around 7th or 8th place in a 12 team league. After two rounds they realign and play a top 6 and a bottom 6. Palmer Brown’s team was in the bottom half last year.

Because every national team coach we get plays favorites. Arena, b Bradley, klinnsman, and berhalter all played favorites. We will never get a nat coach who does not.
To be honest every NT coach everywhere plays favorites. If you judge things from certain perspective every coach at every competitive level does. Of course usually it’s just that coach values different attributes than someone else. JK valued a destroyer type #6 so he favored Beckerman, GB would call Yueill because he can drop a 50 yd diagonal ball on a dime so he calls Jackson. You could say both played favorites or you could say both picked players that had the attributes that fit the team philosophy.
Rapid Wien is in 2nd, EPB plays for Austria Wien which is in 7th. That’s where they finished last year as well. They are 14 points behind RB Salzburg and 30 goals behind in goal differential. Looks like the fixed the error in the article

As for EPB I’m not sure, I know some of the Austrian clubs didn’t allow players to leave in November. Salzburg did not so maybe AW didnt to. I kept seeing impressive highlight videos of EPB so I went and looked for all touch videos and he seemed to have one or two just bad giveaways but let’s face it most CBs have those over a course of 90 minutes. Perhaps there’s an agreement leave him in November we’ll let him go in March or maybe Berhalter and his staff like Miazga, Brooks, Richards, and Ream better.
Find one of the all touch videos floating around out there. He plays a back heel around the 11th minute that is pure filth. Yunus who?
Yeah- watched one of those last night. You obviously miss a lot in seeing only touches/not seeing how he is looking positionally, off the ball throughout the game- but he sure looked confident and lively, had some very nice ideas/moments, dished a few balls that perhaps should have been assists/finished. Very good signs this early for him.
