Julian Green is on fire right now, and his case for a U.S. Men’s National Team call-up is strengthening as a result.
Green scored in a third straight game for SpVgg Greuther Furth on Friday, netting the final goal in a convincing 3-0 home win over FC Erzgebirge Aue. The 25-year-old attacker got on the scoresheet at the hour-mark by getting on the end of a cross and using his right foot to direct a scuffed shot home from inside the six-yard box.
The finish gave Green five goals in his last nine league matches, and helped move Greuther Furth back into the final spot in the promotion zone of Germany’s second division. The club currently sits in third place in the 2. Bundesliga with 35 points from 19 games.

The veteran, who has yet to be called up to the USMNT under head coach Gregg Berhalter, now has eight goals in 20 starts and 21 appearances across all competitions this season. His next chance to earn a call-up could come in March, though the Americans have yet to schedule any friendlies for the upcoming international window.
Green played the first 75 minutes in Friday’s match before being substituted. He also earned a yellow card in the 22nd.
Weird to think about, but Green is one of only three active USMNT players to have scored a goal at a World Cup (Brooks and Bradley also have a goal apiece). Just a statistic.
I’ve been posting above Green for years on SBI. So GB likes a left side mid, and a right side mid then …. In a 4-3-3, Adams (6-pivot), McKennie (8-right), Green (other 8). Haven’t seen this midfield trio since the France friendly. You remember, Green got LUCKY on a turn around, and struck the ball, on a half bounce, passed Hugo Lloris (World Class GK). …but Yeah, he’s not really USMNT material. With CP @ LW, Soto-CF/9, and Reyna @ RW, and that trio starting, I bet money, stats would back up, the eye test. Chances created, passing, turnovers, possession would all be high. If Green isn’t injured, I’m confident his play, will put in the March friendlys!!
There’s a great article on ESPN highlighting Julian Green and even though I don’t get bogged down in every little stat available, his numbers certainly show he’s producing, he’s finally settled into a position, and Sarachan has some very positive things to say about him. He brought him in several times. There’s no way he doesn’t deserve a call up. Period.

If he doesn’t get called into camp, then Berhalter should just say he doesn’t rate him, that he’s not in his plans, and that he’s not going to be a part of the program while he’s the manager.
I think he has shown that he belongs in the Bundesliga.If his team doesn’t get promoted, maybe he will be purchased by a club in the top flight.
He didn’t hit it cleanly off his boot. Just got lucky, so it doesn’t mean anything. He’s not NATs material.

Another quality match for Green, adding more fuel to those calling for Green to be called into the USMNT Camp(s). Green may not be a starter for the USMNT, but he should definitely be in the conversation for inclusion in the 23 as a back-up.

He should be in the conversation for the starting central midfield spot next to WM. If Musah commits it would be a good competition, but if not, he’d be the first guy I’d want to see in that spot. He and Musah have different strengths that could be leveraged depending on the opponent.
Green’s competition would be Reyna since Reyna moves inside from the flank and becomes the 10. There is no way Green is a two-way 8 like Musah.
IDK about starting, but he should be in the conversation as a back-up.
It’s been a long time since we’ve had the kind of midfield talent we could field come WCQ, especially if Musah does commit to representing the US.

With the number of games in 2021 this depth is a good thing to have.
Musah’s preferred position is CM, he’s been used at his club as a Wide Mid due to lack of options. One of he US’s selling points is that he’ll have the chance to play his preferred position. Yes Reyna is also a CM, but there will be plenty of opportunity for interchange between Musah & Reyna as one cuts inside and the other cuts outside to disorganize opponents.
McKennie & Musah are high octane CMs that will run opponents all over the field and harass them. This will tire both our CMs and the Opposition. Having Green/Lletget come on late in the game to go at tired legs or just provide a change of approach could provide great results.
