Soto eligible to play for Norwich City after being granted work permit

Sebastian Soto’s impressive loan spell in the Netherlands attracted parent club Norwich City to bring him back early and now the American striker is eligible to feature for the club.

Norwich City announced Friday that Soto has been granted a work permit, allowing him to train and play going forward. Soto’s involvement in the November and December USMNT camps gave him enough international experience to obtain a work permit, which saw less strict restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. Men’s National Team forward spent the first half of the European season on loan with Eerste Divisie side Telstar, scoring seven goals in 12 appearances. His impressive time in Holland caught the eye of Norwich City manager Daniel Farke, who has recalled Soto early with the Canaries leading the EFL Championship table.

After not getting a true test with German side Hannover in the final stages of his time there, Soto has been full of confidence at both club and international level. The 20-year-old made his senior USMNT debut back in November in a 6-2 win over Panama, scoring twice in the friendly victory.

Soto was also included in the USMNT’s 6-0 friendly triumph over El Salvador in December and should be expected to play a role in the team during a busy 2021 schedule.

Norwich City is currently leading the English second tier by six points over second place Swansea City. Soto’s arrival could give Farke’s attack a major boost with 17 matches to play.

  1. IF Soto breaks into the rotation at Norwich it would give the USMNT another viable option at CF. I still believe that Sargent is our best option, but Soto has shown himself to be a good poacher with decent hold-up play.
With Sargent, Soto, Hoppe, Gioacchini, & possibly Dike the US has a nice stable of young CFs who should put an end to the need for Jozy & Zardes.
None are the total package, but then again we haven’t seen that since Dempsey and/or McBride.

    • Zardes, most goals by an American in MLS 2 of last 3 years (T2 in 2019), lead Columbus to MLS Cup. Most USMNT goals in 2019. Always in the right spot, makes effective runs that create chances for himself and opens space for his teammates, our best forward on the counter press. If he played for Cardiff City instead of Columbus he’d be everyone’s favorite. Started vs Canada 4-1 W, Sargent started vs Canada 2-0 L. He’s not as technical as the youngsters but his soccer IQ is easily the highest.

      • johnnyr, it seems like the only ones who appreciate all that Zardes brings is you, me and every coach he has ever played for.

      • Totally agree! Zardes is playing and is a huge difference maker for an MLS champion.
Now, is Soto simply breaks into a rotation at Norwich, he should jump ahead of Zardes right away?! Why?! I will concede that championship is a bit stronger than MLS still, but not by such a margin that getting minutes in one trumps dominating in the other,

    • Gary, I think there is strong correlation to you and actually watching Gyasi play (you as Galaxy supporter and my as a Crew fan).
