Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Yedlin, Adams, and more

Galatasaray retained the top spot in the Turkish Super Lig on Saturday with DeAndre Yedlin continuing to impress for his new club.

Yedlin went the distance at right back for the league leaders in a 2-0 home victory over Erzurum. The 26-year-old helped shut down Erzurum’s attacking front in the win, while also putting in a strong outing individually. Yedlin led the match with nine duels won and also had the most successful tackles with three. He also won all four of his aerial battles and made two interceptions in another strong performance since arriving from Newcastle United.

Saturday’s win sees Galatasaray move three points clear of second place Besiktas with 14 league matches to go. Up next for the club is a midweek trip to Ankaragucu on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Tyler Adams dominated in RB Leipzig’s comeback win over Borussia Monchengladbach while Sergino Dest impressed in Barcelona’s road win over Sevilla. Yunus Musah got the start for Valencia, but couldn’t help the Spanish club avoid a three-goal defeat. Matt Miazga returned to Anderlecht’s backline on Sunday and helped the club to an important road win over Standard Liege.

Chris Richards retained his starting role for Hoffenheim in a 1-1 league draw with Union Berlin. Matthew Hoppe and Schalke suffered a lopsided defeat to Pellegrino Matarazzo’s Stuttgart on Saturday.

  1. Assuming most, if not all, of the U23 eligible players won’t be released for Olympics, I think the USMNT should enter the Copa America as well
There are some really good players that won’t make Gold Cup or be released for Olympics
GGG could give the 2nd string some much needed international exposure by playing in the Copa America

    Reply
    • Qatar and Australia have already been accepted as the non-federation teams. The field has been set since 2019, they’ve held the draw and have the match schedule set.

      Reply
      • Qatar and Australia have withdrawn. WC qualifiers were rescheduled and they have conflicts. It’s unclear if the Copa will proceed with 10 teams or if two new teams will be added.
Having said that, the schedule for the U.S. is already pretty busy, I don’t know if it makes much sense to add another competition for this summer.

  2. Ok so here’s my three weeks out roster prediction. Not what I’d choose, how I think it will look.
GK: Steffen, Horvath, Odunze (I believe MLS GKs will be left in US to train) Perhaps CJ Dos Santos
LB: Robinson, McKenzie (ok not his best position but if we’re going to play a LCB as LB rather it be Mark than Ream)
    CB: Richards, Brooks, Miazga, Long
    RB: Dest, Cannon
    6: Adams, Otasowie
    8: McKennie, Green
    8: Musah, Lletget
    LW: Pulisic, Arriola
    CF: Zardes, ArJo, Sargent
    RW:Reyna, Weah
Not much to argue if this group was picked: EPB but he’s now injured, Hoppe, Siebatcheu if he’s actually interested for Zardes who has CCL upcoming. With no roster restrictions you could bring in those two forwards anyway.

    Reply
    • @Johnnyrazor – With Green being sidelined with Covid, not sure he’ll be cleared in time for this camp.
Personally I don’t see the point of ArJo & Zardes. I’d much prefer that we try Hoppe and continue with either Soto or Gioacchini

      Reply
      • I thought about that on Green but it will basically be a month from his infection. His recovery time would actually be more than Wes’s last Fall. Of course Covid affects people differently so. With both he and ArJo I included them because Berhalter mentioned them both by name as guys they still wanted to see. This is also the last run thru before NL so the roster will be close to what 3G would use for that in must win matches, I see Hoppe either playing Olympics or GC this Summer. In a two match final four you need guys you know what you are going to get. Zardes hasn’t played with Reyna or Weah so if he’s one of the guys for NL I think he’s brought in. That being said Crew play CL 4/8 so he could be left home as a favor given he’ll be gone in the Summer for NL or GC. Soto is on U23 Prov. and only playing for Norwich U23s so I think he’ll be in Mexico for OQ. Giaocchini hasn’t been in great form of late for Caen, so I think he’ll be left at home too. We’ll know more when we get the camp roster for U23s and the final U23 roster.

    • Your March lineup is cool, say for one observation. I thought you would’ve realized this by now. McKenzie isn’t a left footed CB. SBI just had an article about the Union signing a Scottish CB from Kilmarnock. The article quoted the technical director Tanner saying the team hasn’t had a left footed CB since Austin Trusty was traded. I thought, it was strange when you mentioned this before, because I’ve seen Ramos play him on the right next to Richards, during his time in the U20s. Keita wouldn’t have started over McKenzie. Even played some at RB in the last U-20 tournament, coming off an injury. Glesnes & Jack Elliott have been at LCB for Curtin’s side, though both aren’t left footed either. While I agree, with the LB, after Robinson shouldn’t be Ream, McKenzie is right footed. Sam Vines, as you brought to my attention last year, has been on starting XI for the Rapids for a few seasons now. Gloster & Bello aren’t up to speed so I think Vines fits what GB wants at LB. Since you have Zardes & Long, I don’t think Vines would be bad as a backup.

      Reply
      • No McKenzie isn’t left footed but he’s pretty dual footed and was the regular LCB for Union. For some reason I was thinking he had played LB in the U20 but your correct it was RB. Vines will be with the U23s that’s why I didn’t include him. I think honestly they could just go with Robinson and Dest can fill in at LB if need be. I wanted to go Kobe Hernandez Foster because it seems like Gregg always grabs one that no one was expecting. They shutdown the U19 ranks in Germany so he hasn’t been playing so that seemed unlikely. Maybe Gasper, if it’s just someone that might play 10 minutes total.

      • Vines, Yueill, Robinson, Ferreira, Soto, Cardoso, etc have already been added to the U-23 roster for Olympic Q’s, so we will not see any of those guys!

    • Good first stab…. no idea what it will actually look like. I suppose I’d guess Aaronson would be involved, particularly as Salzburg are now out of Europe. If it was a choice, between Aaronson and Green, I suppose I’d prefer Green, only because we haven’t seen him in a few years and would be interesting to see how he fits.

      Reply
      • It will be interesting as to where Gregg plays Aaronson. He’s used him as that 8/10 which went more with what he did at Union but RBS plays more with the Double 6 so he’s played mostly on the wing/wide midfield. If Aaronson is released for U23s I imagine it will be right before the first match he won’t be in pre-tournament camp. If he’s not released I’d say bring both he and Green theirs no roster limit

    • When Pulisic came on he replaced Giroud as a lone striker. He was starved for service and didn’t have much of a chance to be on the ball.About 5 minutes after Pulisic came on they brought in Wermer and I think it was Reece James. They looked a bit livlier after that, but hardly posed a threat.

      Reply
    • He did come on for Giroud and positionally, yea u could say that. The top 3 were fluid. Werner came on for Ziyech not too much after.

Had one promising dribble into the box for a shot that was skied.

      Reply
    • I thought so at 1st glance, because he came in for Giroud, but I never saw CP drop in to overload the midfield. He maintained in a traditional 9, especially when Ziyech was subbed for Werner. I saw at least 1 run, when I thought he was going to get hurt.

  3. Reyna was robbed of a goal by an early whistle that should have waited a bit to play advantage. Sancho did score on the ensuing PK, so it did not hurt the outcome, just sad to see Reyna not add to his goal count. Otherwise, he had a decent game, missing a couple shots, one of which he should have put on frame.

    Reply
  4. Sargent played f=very well in the win. In addition to the goal, he had a great shot saved at the near post(if he had hit it higher, keeper would have had no chance)and an assist called back for offside. He tracked back and won balls and his movement was very good. On the goal, he had made a good penetrating run into the box that was not rewarded, but rather than hanging his head, he quickly repositioned himself and made a second run that was rewarded and he scored.

As the second half wore on, it was clear he was tiring and the coach made the right decision (albeit maybe a bit later than he should have)to withdraw him.
