Borussia Dortmund will face off against its biggest rival on Saturday, and the team will do so without Giovanni Reyna.
Reyna is one of three players that did not travel with the squad to Munich ahead of this weekend’s Der Klassiker clash vs. Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund announced on Friday. The club did not give a reason for the young winger’s omission from the gameday roster.

The 18-year-old Reyna joins fellow attacker Jadon Sanco and fullback Raphael Guerreiro as players who will miss the high-profile showdown. Borussia Dortmund currently sits in sixth place in the German Bundesliga with 39 points while Bayern is atop the standings with 52 points.
Reyna has made six starts in 16 league matches this season, scoring three times. The U.S. Men’s National Team player last saw the field this past Saturday, starting and playing 70 minutes in a 3-0 home win over Arminia Bielefeld.
Hindsight is everything but sure looked like Terzic could have used Gio as a sub today. I get it you don’t want him to burn out but how the hell are you gonna burn him out using him as a sub for 20 minutes as needed. Dortmund we’ll find a new manager so perhaps things will be all good for Gio come next season.
KC – you might be right. At his age and this being his first full year as a pro, they could be cutting his minutes to give him a break.
But he hasn’t been starting, at least not as much as he was under Favre. He has started 3 out of the last 7 and 1 out of the last 4. 2 out of the last 4 he was an unused sub. My recollection is that he was getting more starts under Favre.
Sancho is really hot right now, Guerrero is also playing well. They were quite secretive about their absence it’s obviously a disciplinary issue or Covid protocol. You wouldn’t not bring those 3 no matter Gio’s form.
That look on his face sums up ABC’s feelings as well since this game will be NATIONALLY TELEVISED ON ABC.

Damn. I wish I had known it was going to be televised; I would have at least watched it.

But after so many months of zero Bundesliga and zero German cup games anywhere on American TV, not even in Spanish, I never even look for German games on the schedule anymore, including here on the pages-long SBI list that’s now nearly always full of useless stuff for streaming only.

If the marketers had wanted Americans to get back into the habit of watching German soccer, they should have planned to televise more than just a measly 3 or 4 games in the entire season,* and advertise the televised games. But no, it wouldn’t even help now to advertise on ESPN or ABC, since there’s no longer any soccer to give us a reason to watch those boring channels in the first place. Grrrrr …

Transfer?
Not at this part of the season. Window is closed. More likely injury or “The Rona” ?
1. Injury.
2. Virus.
3. Coach’s decision.
4. Imminent transfer to MLS.
My concern is that, like what seems to be happening with Pulisic, the new coach at Dortmund does not like Gio as much as the old coach, and his playing time is being reduced as a result.
MLS can still bring players in, so a transfer in to MLS is theoretically an option, although obviously not a realistic option.
Johnny99 the manager is only there until May.
Gio has been starting. This is his first full season so I think it’s more about making sure he doesn’t burn out.
