Reports: Chris Gloster closing in on move to NYCFC

Chris Gloster had been linked with a move away from Dutch side PSV throughout 2021 so far and is reportedly set to make that move permanent in the coming days.

MLS club NYCFC is set to acquire Gloster, his agent confirmed to Dutch outlet ED Thursday. The club had acquired Gloster’s MLS rights in a trade with the New York Red Bulls earlier this week, the Washington Post reported.

Gloster, 20, has been with PSV since August 2019 after joining from German club Hannover. The left back made 14 appearances in the Eerste Divisie in his first season in Eindhoven, but since has seen his playing time drop.

The former U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team defender only made six appearances in 2020-21 with his last coming in October 2020. Gloster was one of several youth players who was told by PSV management that he could look for a new club after falling out of the pecking order.

Gloster was linked with Newcastle United during the January Transfer Window, but a move never materialized and the defender stayed in Holland.

NYCFC traded veteran defender Ronald Matarrita to FC Cincinnati earlier this offseason, but did sign Malte Amundsen from Danish club Vejle. Gloster’s arrival would give Ronny Deila a young and exciting defender to add to the mix ahead of the 2021 MLS season.

  1. NYCFC does more exporting than some of the other clubs in MLS, so maybe the player sees this as an opportunity to play right away and attract eyes that otherwise wouldn’t have seen him buried on the bench or in youth sides elsewhere

    • A concept all MLS clubs should aspire to do. Being a selling league is a great way to attract/showcase talent and provide revenue to a club/league.

Far too many in our soccer system have too much pride and too much ignorance to accept this reality.

  2. Interesting move. We rarely see a guy jump back to MLS so soon. Hopefully this move will help him reset his career because he was a very highly thought of prospect in the youth teams.
Most guys his age have tried to stick it out across Europe and bounce around 2nd tier clubs. I like this move. Gives him a home he can trust and possibly a good foundation to build upon. Europe will still be there in 2–3 years if he plays well and he will still be a young defender at that age too. Seems like a very practical transition .

    • What Gloster would be looking at is half the other U20 backline is already getting caps and he has zero. He was seen by many as on a level with Dest if not Richards. GB loves club minutes so go someplace you can play. This is actually a classic gambit, come to MLS to start and platform to the Nats. It’s just not fashionable because there is so much traffic the other way. But he is surplus to PSV and if the next team doesn’t start him he is done for this cycle. As it stands he’s at Jong PSV and not even on the U23s despite being out of fashion at PSV. And to me as you get in your 20s if you aren’t playing at x go to y and get some minutes or your career will eventually become Zelalem’s.
