Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Aaronson, Brooks, and more

Brenden Aaronson continued his fine run of form for Red Bull Salzburg on Sunday, helping Jesse Marsch’s side roll to a home victory.

Aaronson assisted once in Salzburg’s 3-1 win over Sturm Graz on Sunday morning, following up his good pair of appearances with the U.S. Men’s National Team in March. After Patson Daka broke the deadlock in the third minute, Aaronson set up the dangerous striker in the fifth as he doubled Salzburg’s early advantage.

Daka would complete a first-half hat trick in the 11th minute to give the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead. Despite losing the clean sheet in the 13th minute, Salzburg would move four points clear of second place Rapid Vienna with nine matches to play. Aaronson also completed three of six dribbles and made two recoveries from his attacking midfield position.

Up next for the club is a trip to Rapid Vienna next weekend.

Elsewhere, John Brooks helped Wolfsburg pitch a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Cologne. Tyler Adams got the start for RB Leipzig, but couldn’t help his team avoid a 1-0 defeat to league leaders Bayern Munich. Tim Weah came off the bench to help Lille defeat PSG 1-0 on the road, moving three points clear of the defending champions.

Christian Pulisic scored his first Chelsea goal in 2021, but left with a hamstring injury at halftime. Erik Palmer-Brown also helped his team earn a shutout victory in Austria Vienna’s 2-0 triumph over Rheindorf Altach. Sebastian Saucedo’s 90th minute goal helped Pumas fight back to earn a draw in Liga MX action.

    • Should be getting more minutes with David out for awhile with a ruptured ligament in his ankle. The story said several weeks and Yzici has Covid so they only have 2 true strikers but Ikone also plays there a lot for them.

  1. FWIW, Louicious Don Deedson is now cap-tied to Haiti after appearing for them in a WCQ against Belize last week, so he can be removed from this list.

  2. Wood made his second consecutive start maybe he can turn this around. Should be a good battle between Furth and Hamburg for the 2nd automatic promotion spot.

    • Bobby Wood will leave Hamburg at the end of the season to join Real Salt Lake!!
Unless something changes drastically. Maybe…just maybe….MLS can jump start his fitness and form

    • We had a discussion last week when his signing became official. I cautioned people that he may not have instant success since he’s rarely gone more than 15 minutes since his knee injury in March of 2019. He’d only started 3 times in two years since the injury until starting 2 in a row. Of course the last time he made two starts he then didn’t play again for 20 matches (six months).

  3. Has Sargent got an injury? I thought Chandler looked sharp against Dortmund. On the other side, Reyna seems to have slipped down the pecking order a bit. Any ideas out there why?

    • Regarding Reyna, I’m inclined to chalk it up to growing pains and a new manager. It was clear Lucien Favre rated him very highly and wasn’t afraid to give him minutes on the pitch and the freedom to make mistakes and gain experience. Terzić may either prefer veteran experience or want Reyna to work through his poor run of form before putting him back in. I don’t think there’s any risk of him getting lost in the shuffle — only the question of when its the right time to give him another significant run of minutes. And with a team, well, I’m not going to say “in crisis”, but essentially in crisis, I think it can go either way.

    • I don’t believe it’s anything sinister or underhanded about Reyna’s playing time. He’s 18, he played in 15 matches his 1st season, and has nearly doubled his matches this year, plus international matches. I think, it would take an athlete Gio’s age, time to get used to playing 40 plus matches a season/year. I think calling it a sophomore slump is going overboard, but Reyna’s form doesn’t look as sharp as it did in the fall. I don’t have to be an expert to see this is the most ball he’s played in his life. A lot of expectations on him, tho. I’m like Wow! He’s just now, able to vote, serve in the military, or buy a pack of smokes. (Musah is going thru a similar thing, except Valencia vets are back from injury, cutting Musah’s playing time.)

    • Personally I’m not worried about Reyna. In the last 2 internationals you could tell he was very frustrated in the first game vs. Jamaica, missing a lot of chances. Scoring in the second game helped his confidence. His missing in the first game didn’t worry me because it looked clearly like he was rusty from not playing more than maybe 10 or 15 minutes per game. You can’t really get match fitness that way, nor do you get enough opportunities to hone your game skills. His time will come and we know he has enough ability to succeed. All he needs is time. Considering that Dortmund isn’t doing nearly as well this season, there will probably be a new manager next year, so Reyna may get a lot more opportunities then.

      • Terzic was always intended to just be an interim manager. They’ve already hired Marco Ross the manager from Monchengladbach for next season. He was also the manager at Salzburg before Jesse Marsch.

  4. Aaronson really has had an impressive transition to Europe. If he continues along this path he’ll be with Adams at the Parent club sooner than later.
Overall the USMNT players are doing well. We’ve never had players of this caliber playing at these levels at such a young age.
We’ve got a very promising crop of midfielders and some outstanding talent on the back-line. We just need a little more depth and time (experience) for these talents to reach their full potential.

    • I really don’t have a sense for where his ceiling is, but it’s clear he’s got plenty of climbing left to do before he reaches it. I’m usually quick to play down suggestions of a player moving up the chain that quickly, but honestly, it seems like he’s on that kind of trajectory. And with Salzburg being one of the most prominent feeder teams in Europe, you can almost count on their top two or three players going to big clubs every window. It’ll be interesting to see where Patson Daka goes, and then how long Aaronson takes to grow into the European game and gain experience before taking the next step, himself. I’m just glad he’s in such a nurturing environment right now. He really couldn’t have asked for a smoother transition.

    • Aaronson has demonstrated his talent ever since he started in Philly. He has all the tools, except perhaps, size/strength. He has very quick feet and lots of speed, he controls the ball well and uses that skill to enable him the see the field, he strikes the ball well, he is a tireless worker and has the soccer brain needed to find good spots. He also seems to avoid injury despite his slender build and willingness to challenge anyone for the ball. He will be hard to keep him from starting for the USMNT for long.

    • Since you mentioned Adams, thought I would raise something about his game. Versus Bayern, too often he looked too tentative with his passing. It seemed almost like his mind set was, well, I’m a defensive mid, so I should think defense first. He had a couple of turnovers and a couple of passes that missed, but then that was true of just about all the Leipzig players. The difference in the two teams’ passing quality was clearly evident. Anyway, when Adams did pass forward, he made a couple of excellent passes from midfield to the final third. I think he should not be afraid to do that more often. A problem Leipzig has is that they haven’t gotten any replacement for Werner. Did they just bank his transfer fee? That team really needs a good striker. Kind of amazing they’ve done as well as they have without one.

      Reply
      • I wouldn’t be shocked if Patson Daka ends up in Leipzig sooner than later and if Aaronson follows him eventually, especially if Marcel Sabitzer ends up going to the Premier League as rumored. But then I’ve also got to wonder why Dominik Szoboszlai hasn’t seen the pitch since his transfer in January. It may be an issue of taking time to learn Nagelsmann’s system, but Szoboszlai is highly touted and certainly didn’t move to Leipzig to sit the bench. Maybe he’s a project for next year.

  5. Just saying, Antonee Robinson did not play and 2 of the 3 Aston Villa goals came down his usual side of the pitch.
