Tyler Boyd did not get a chance to help Besiktas win the Turkish Super Lig title this past season, but the American winger looks set to get a real chance with the club going forward.
Boyd’s agent Orcun Yucel admitted that Boyd will not head out on loan next season in an interview with Turkish outlet Ortacizgi. The U.S. Men’s National Team attacking player will remain with the first team squad and get a real chance to earn consistent minutes with his parent club.
“Tyler Boyd will fight in the Champions League with Beşiktaş next season,” Yucel said. “There is no possibility of transferring to any club for now. We do not plan to go anywhere for the next year.”
Boyd joined Besiktas in July 2019 and has since totaled 34 appearances with four goals scored and one assist registered. The 26-year-old spent the second half of the 2020-21 season on loan with fellow Turkish club Sivasspor, scoring five goals in 15 matches.
Besiktas won the Super Lig title and will have a chance at Champions League qualification in the Fall. Boyd’s contract with Besiktas is set to run until June 2023 and now with the backing of his agent and manager Sergen Yalcin, could be in the mix for a key role in all competitions for the club.
Born in New Zealand, Boyd has earned 10 caps for the USMNT to date, scoring two goals and appearing in the Concacaf Gold Cup and Nations League.
I like Boyd but the USMNT landscape is much different now than it was the last time he was called in. If he hopes to remain in consideration for the US 23 he’s going to have to overtake at least 1 (Arriola) and possibly 2 (Morris if he recovers) of Berhaulter’s guys while fending off some of the younger generation.
Pulisic, Reyna, Weah are probably the top 3 Wingers. Musah’s versatility also makes him an option out wide. Arriola & Morris (if healthy) are roughly the same age as Boyd and have Gregg’s confidence. That will be difficult to overcome in order to get into the 23.
Then there’s the next wave of players. Aaronson, Konrad, Llanez, & Luca who are all making inroads and putting pressure on Boyds’ generation.
A lot can happen over the next 12 months, but if Boyd wants to stay in the picture he’ll need a very good showing against the Swiss.
Boyd won’t be able to show anything because he wasn’t on the roster for the Swiss match.
You failed to mention why Boyd got loaned out in the first place. That’s key information missed. He was loaned out because Besiktas stupidly filled all their foreign roster spots and had to drop him to be in compliance. This was after he started the first 5 or 6 matches of the season. Boyd was in limbo for months and couldn’t be loaned out until the winter because he was dropped after after the transfer deadline. So to go on loan to Sivaspor and perform, right off the ball, with limited training is an accomplishment. It’s way Boyd was recalled to the USMNT.
