MLS Week 5 Scoreboard: TFC beats Crew, Revs tie Union, and more

Toronto FC showed off some of its new faces on Wednesday night, but it was a pair of old, familiar faces that helped the Canadian side earn a much-needed victory.

Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore scored goals to help TFC earn a 2-0 victory over the Columbus Crew in Orlando.

Fresh off a 2-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls, TFC returned to its temporary home at Exploria Stadium, and handed new signing Yeferson Soteldo his first MLS start and new signing Kemar Lawrence his first appearance for TFC.

The Philadelphia Union and New England Revolution played a scoreless first 84 minute, but then traded late goals just three minutes apart in a 1-1 draw at Subaru Park. The Union were fresh from earning their first league win by beating the Chicago Fire, but couldn’t make it two in a row despite netting a late Kacper Przybylko equalizer to cancel out a Teal Bunbury finish.

Here is a closer look at Wednesday’s MLS action:

WEDNESDAY

Toronto FC 2, Crew 0 (Final)

(Michael Bradley 13′, Jozy Altidore 87′)

Man of the Match: Michael Bradley scored TFC’s opening goal, and his free kick helped set up Jozy Altidore’s insurance goal.

Moment of the Match: Alex Bono raced out for a hard challenge outside the penalty area that could have drawn him a red card, but instead the referee showed Bono yellow, keeping the Crew from having a game-changing man advantage.

Match to Forget: Aboubacar Keita came on to start the second half and struggled, including being beaten to a header by Omar Gonzalez, which led to TFC’s second goal.

Inter Miami 0, CF Montreal 2 (Final)

(Bjørn Johnsen 14′, 25′)

Man of the Match: Bjorn Johnsen. The CF Montreal striker made the difference before the two-hour weather delay, scoring twice in the opening 25 minutes with a pair of low and clinical finishes.

Moment of the Match: Johnsen’s early winner. While the lengthy delay will be a huge talking point, it was the early opener from Johnsen off an exquisite through ball from Djordje Mihailovic that set the tone for CF Montreal’s victory.

Match to Forget: Leandro Gonzalez Pirez. Inter Miami as a whole had a dismal showing that it cannot forget about fast enough, but the Argentine center back was the worst of the bunch after being involved in both goals and committing several turnovers.

Union 1, Revolution 1 (Final)

(Kacper Przybylko 88′) – (Teal Bunbury 85′)

Man of the Match: Carles Gil. Gil didn’t register a goal or assist, but he was the best option for the Revs midfield. The Spaniard drew four fouls and was confident on the ball, helping set up a handful of chances in the match which easily could’ve went New England’s way.

Moment of the Match: Gustavo Bou’s 93rd minute effort from close range forced Andre Blake into a frantic late save, but the Jamaican did well to repel the shot and earn the Union one point on the evening.

Match to Forget: Jon Bell. The young Revs center back lost out to Kacper Przybylko on the eventual tying goal for the Union and overall easily could’ve been called for a penalty in the early stages of the match. Bell hacked down Przybylko in the box without winning any of the ball, but luckily was let off the hook.

Dynamo 1, Sporting Kansas City 0 (Final)

(Maxi Urruti 56′)

Man of the Match: Tim Parker. Acquired in the offseason to stabilize the Dynamo backline, Parker played a key role in keeping the cleaning sheet.

Moment of the Match: Maxi Urruti scored the winner in the 56th, but Dynamo head coach Tab Ramos was shown a red card in the 89th minute after arguing for a foul against Fafa Picault.

Match to Forget: Alan Pulido. Pulido was given the start up top, but only had one shot on frame and was subbed off in the 81st minute.

Minnesota United 1, Whitecaps 0 (Final)

(Ramon Abila 72′)

Man of the Match: Ramon Abila will get the credit for the game winner, but goalie Tyler Miller was excellent in net for the Loons in their first victory of the season. The start was also Miller’s first of the season and the 28 year-old made five saves to earn the clean sheet.

Moment of the Match: In the 72nd minute, Ramon Abila broke the deadlock for Minnesota United with a glancing header that beat goalie Maxime Crepeau at the far post.

Match to Forget: Lucas Cavallini. The Canadian striker was quiet throughout the match and was unable to provide his normal spark in the final third. In the second half Cavallini had arguably the best chance of the night for the Whitecaps with a breakaway attempt on goal, but he was slowed down by the Minnesota United defense and unable to put a shot on frame.

Earthquakes 0, Sounders 1 (Final)

(Cristian Roldan 18′)

Man of the Match: Alex Roldan. The right wing back was solid in defense all game, keeping Cade Cowell quiet and the Earthquakes attack at bay throughout the match. In stoppage time goalie Stefan Frei was forced off with an apparent knee injury and Roldan stepped up at keeper, making a massive save on a free kick into the box that preserved the Sounders victory.

Moment of the Match: In the 18th minute the Earthquakes struggled to clear a loose ball out of the box and it fell to Cristian Roldan who fired a screaming volley with his left foot that rattled crossbar and nestled into the back of the net.

Match to Forget: Javier “Chofis” Lopez. Lopez struggled to affect the game from his advanced midfield position and was subbed out in the 65th minute. The entire Earthquakes attack fell flat against the Sounders, so it is not all on Lopez, but the Mexican playmaker did not get on the ball enough to make an impact.
