Duane Holmes is one player that will always be visible in the attacking side of the field and the American midfielder continues to prepare for a new role with Huddersfield Town this season.
Holmes has been used in several roles during his time in the EFL Championship, but has been moved into a right midfield role in Carlos Corberan’s 4-2-3-1 system so far this preseason. The midfielder is coming off a one-goal performance in a 2-0 friendly win over Southport over the weekend and will be eager to continue his early impressions in his new role going forward.
“I think the gaffer likes players to be versatile,” Holmes said in an interview with Yorkshire Live. “This system allows me to play inside and for Ollie [Turton] to get on the outside and obviously it works.
“I’m happy to players wherever he needs me,” Holmes said.
Holmes, 26, made the move back to his boyhood club in January and went on to make 19 appearances for the Terriers in league play. The attacking midfielder scored two goals and registered two assists over that span, reinserting himself into a regular first team spot after seeing his playing time fluctuate prior at Derby County.
Holmes was used in six different positions during the 2020-21 season, but now looks to have made the right side of Huddersfield’s midfield his permanent role heading into the new campaign. Despite winning only three league matches during the second half of the season, the Terriers remained safe in the EFL Championship table.
Corberan’s squad opens the new season on August 7 against Derby County, the first chance for Huddersfield to focus on the new goals at hand. Holmes has seen both highs and lows in his professional career, but expects the club to be ready to go on opening day.
“Definitely, not,” Holmes said when asked if there will be a slow start to the season.. The lads we have brought in will help massively, they’re all here to help and that’s what we want.”
I agree completely with the other 2 posts, and that’s Duane Holmes would have been a great option for this team, but hopefully we see him in the shirt again before his time has passed!
Holmes was part of last GC roster, wonder why he wasn’t on the provisional? Holmes as an 8 would be on a lot of people’s B team.

What is there to wonder? Berhalter was pretty clear any situation where a player in Europe needed to be in preseason they were left off the GC roster. Holmes has a new manager and a new position in that manager’s system so he was left with his club. Cannon and Hoppe are set to be sold, Moore is a consistent starter for his club and his manager is returning.

Emmanuel Sabbi? I’m of the opinion, GB does a lot of lip service. If it’s true, players like Luca Del Torre are turning down Nat call ups to play for club. Then I think, that’s backwards. (Country >Club) GB has incentivize playing well for clubs to get Nat call ups, only to have players turning down call ups to play for their clubs?! C’mon JR, you don’t find it odd?! At all?! Glad the guy vacationing of the coast of Spain is playing well! Wonder who’s been low key campaigning on SBI for ‘em?
Haha, not sure what club I looked up but apparently Huddersfield doesn’t have a new manager. It’s still pretty clear unless you wanted to highlight yourself for sale you weren’t coming. I think some of these European guys got offered and said no because they knew what the rest of the roster was going to look like. I don’t think those players did themselves any favors though. Araujo has certainly dropped another spot on the depth chart behind your guy Shaq. EPB is now looking up at Sands and Robinson. I get CCV actually playing at Spurs but EPB isn’t anywhere. I think Luca is still ahead of Busio and Williamson but it would have been a chance to slam the door on Lleget and Acosta by him that he left open. I don’t know Heracles well enough maybe he’s trying to move back into an attacking role instead of the deep midfield role he played last year or maybe they brought someone else in that he’s competing with.
Sabbi’s real season in Denmark has started that is an easy one to figure out. Durkin, I’m not really sure other than he seems to kind of float from position to position with his club so perhaps he doesn’t want to give his club competition advantage at the spot he feels he’s best at. Also the Belgian League’s first match is this weekend so he’d miss a week or two of actual matches.
I wish he was on this gold cup team. His name been out of the USMNT since his injury on the last pre Gold Cup
