Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind (Busio, Richards and more)

Gianluca Busio and Chris Richards both missed out in being called up for the U.S. men’s national team’s September World Cup qualifiers, but they each took steps this past weekend towards securing their places on the team when October’s qualifiers roll around.

Richards was solid in  his first start for Hoffenheim since returning for a season-long loan while Busio was one of Venezia’s best players in an important 2-1 victory over Emploi on Saturday.

Richards was unable to keep Hoffenheim from suffering a 2-0 loss to Mainz, but he settled right back into the starting lineup and looked sharp in his return, completing a game-high 75 passes to go with a game-high six clearances.

Busio completed 17 of 21 passes and added four successful tackles in his second consecutive start to help Venezia record its first win of the season.

Cameron Carter-Vickers enjoyed a very successful debut for Celtic, scoring a goal and completing 102 passes in a 3-0 romp over Ross County, while Nicholas Gioacchini put in a 32-minutes shift off the bench for Ligue 1 side Montpellier in their 2-0 win vs. St. Etienne.

Joe Scally continued his run as a starter for Borussia Moenchengladbach, completing 51 of 61 passes and adding two tackles and two clearances in a 3-1 win vs. Arminia Bielefeld.

  1. Dante Sealy is at Jong PSV getting playing time and John “Xuxuh” Hilton is at Volendam getting playing time, both in the Eerste Divisie in Holland.

  2. Ives. To your knowledge has Joe Scally ever cross paths with Fabian Johnson at Borussia M? It would have been interesting if they knew each other. Also where is Fabian now?

  3. Scally and Richards appear to be must call ins given their current status as locked in starts for their club teams AND the status of RB and CB positions after 3 USMNT games. Green and Busio could also potentially justify a call up to the roster or at least to be on the continent in case there are other injuries- especially if Reyna and Pulisic don’t come back for October.

With Cannon being mothballed, Yedlin showing major signs of creakiness vs Canada (would not go forward, got burned on D), somewhat redeemed by the assist vs Honduras, someone else needs to be given at least a shot, ASAP. Moore is also not racking up the minutes in the 2nd tier either. And Dest, who may or may be injured by the time October rolls around is yet to show that he’s a plus on the field.

Antonee Robinson has now scored and assisted from LB spot, and even Yedlin got an assist. The supposed offensive wunderkind has no offensive impact to show for it.

Richards also is a must given him starting weekly at Hoffenheim, youth (should be even better in 15 months) and Brooks’ pitiful display. Miles Robinson needs a partner and McKenzie is not getting 90 minutes either, in an inferior league

    • I think Green and Richards should be at the top of the list for future callups. Good arguments could be made for Busio, Scally, and Hoppe, however World Cup qualifying is not the time to make TOO many newbie experiments. Our Gold Cup B team demonstrated that coherent play can win matches. The matches against El Salvador and Canada did not look coherent. Heck… 3/4 of the Honduras match didn’t look good either. We really need to play it safe until we qualify.

      • We’re running out of time/games to be able to integrate new players. If someone is showing promise (Scally) than we need to at least call them into camp so that they can train with the core of the team.
Scally, Richards, Green, Luca DeLaTorre, & Weah are all players that need to be part of the call-ups. Their versatility can help plug multiple holes if we see a rash of injuries again. If we don’t have injuries we’ll at least have them around the team where they can build some chemistry and understanding with the other players.
CCV, Miazga, Busio, Vines, etc… are some of the other fringe/depth players who should be challenging for call-ups as well.

      • They never really replaced Werner a year ago and now they’ve lost Upamecano, Konate and Sabitzer. The team is going to take a step or two back no matter who the manager is. To your point though, whether Red Bull management sees it that way, or blames Jesse, is anyone’s guess.

    • My guess is reinforcements in the January window, possibly from Salzburg. Think Aaronson and Clark too. Leipzig is a seller’s club, and need to restock.

  4. Julian Green deserves a call up … if there’s anything these injuries are showing in World Cup Qualifying and the 3 game windows, is that depth is needed….at least call him in as teams can call in a lot, even if only dressing a few

  5. Do ya’ll remember that classic movie about Peter Pan called “Hook” with Robin Williams? Remember when Rufio, the coolest cat in the bag, came racing in on his makeshift skateboard, flashing his spiked red hair with dyed red tips, and everyone chanted–“Roofio! Roofio! Roofio!” I’d like for Busio to get that same hairstyle, ride out of the tunnel on a makeshift skateboard before games, so that all of us can chant his name in similar fashion– “Busio! Busio! Busio!”

      • Can’t get a Venezia one they’re completely sold out (at least the first run). Paramount+ did a cool segment interviewing their American owner, Busio, and Marketing director. Their marketing budget was basically just photographers taking fashion mag style photos around the city and they posted the pictures on social media platforms. Kits sold out within a day or two without anything else. I really hope they’re able to stay up, owner seemed like a good guy, wish Netflix would do a Sunderland till I die style series with them.
