Joe Scally’s strong start as a Borussia Monchengladbach first-team player continued Saturday with the American fullback scoring his first professional goal.
Adi Hutter’s side claimed a 3-1 road win over Wolfsburg with Scally adding the third goal in second-half stoppage time to secure the three points.
Gladbach raced out to an early two-goal advantage as Breel Embolo and Jonas Hoffmann netted two minutes apart in the opening seven minutes of the match. Luca Waldschmidt pulled a goal back for Wolfsburg in the 24th minute, but the hosts were unable to find an equalizing goal.
With the hosts reduced to 10-men following Maxime Lacroix’s second yellow card offense, Scally took advantage of a miscue at the back to race towards goal and slot home his first Bundesliga goal.
Scally also won 11 of his 14 individual duels in the match while also winning four fouls and winning three of his four tackles. It was an all-around strong performance from the right back, who continued his impressive debut campaign for the Bundesliga side.
The 18-year-old heads into a two-week break before reconvening with Gladbach on October 16 vs. VfB Stuttgart.
This is obviously great news on Scally but how is it that there is no mention of Busio scoring his first Serie A goal on Friday, salvaging a point for Venezia deep into stoppage time?
He’ll be with us at the World Cup next year.
It’s mind-boggling that Berhalter would exclude a fullback who’s a regular starter on a good team from one of the 3-4 best leagues in the world, while including another fullback who can’t even get off the bench on a second division team in Spain.
Its disappoiting he wasn’t called in, but I think peoples reactions are a bit over the top. He’s still a young kid learning to be a professional and this window isnt a daunting one opponents wise, so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal and I also think he gets a call up next window or the january window if he keeps up his run of form
It’s really not mind boggling at all. We have very good depth at fullback with guys who have performed well for club and country. Scally’s pro career is only just beginning. He’ll get his shot, but let’s give him some time to develop and become a consistent pro. There’s no need to coronate him now.
As a side note, having two fullbacks(scally and dest) who can play either side could be very beneficial when building a 23 man WC roster. Might open up an extra spot in midfield or attack for extra variety.
@RONNIET, the fact that “this window isnt a daunting one opponents wise,” is one of the reasons many were disappointed that Scally wasn’t involved in this camp. What better time to call-up a young, inexperienced, but very promising player during WCQ than when the opponents aren’t very daunting? In fact it’s the perfect time to get him into the group for a closer look while building chemistry.
We have very few opportunities remaining where we can introduce players in a relatively low pressure environment. The fact we have a 3 game window (2 of them at home) where he could have gotten his feet wet, but Gregg decided against it…makes me question Gregg’s ability to manage even more.

That kind of attitude is how we wound up with Couva. You don’t blood newbies like Scally ( unless you think he’s the next Pepi) until qualification is well in hand.
This team had trouble with El Salvador, the weakest, on paper team in the Octagon.
It’s way too early to be over confident. Especially with this manager.
I do agree in principle, but the reasoning is weakened when you consider Bello was brought in.
Maybe the best flank defender at this moment.
