Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Aaronson, Steffen, and more

Red Bull Salzburg advanced to the UCL knockout round for the first time in its history on Wednesday and Brenden Aaronson was at the forefront of Matthias Jaissle’s attack.

Aaronson went the distance in a 1-0 home victory over Sevilla, also winning six of his 11 individual duels in the match, and completing over 80% of his passes. The USMNT midfielder has started four of his last five matches for the Austrian giants since returning from international duty and grinded out a strong shift as the club advanced to the knockout stages in a European competition for the fourth-time ever. Red Bull Salzburg finished as Group G runners-up behind Ligue 1 side Lille, meaning a Round of 16 clash against heavyweights like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich could be on the horizon.

Chrstian Pulisic made an impact off of the bench for defending UCL winners Chelsea, assisting once in a 3-3 draw with Russian hosts Zenit St. Petersburg. Pulisic danced his way past Wilmar Barrios before connecting with forward Timo Werner for what looked like the winning goal. However, Zenit’s 94th minute equalizer cost the Blues a chance at top spot in Group H, with Juventus edging Chelsea to first place.

Mark McKenzie started for Genk in a must-win match in Europa League play, but the Belgian side was eliminated after a 1-0 home loss to Rapid Vienna. The USMNT defender made four clearances and completed 90% of his passes, claiming only his fourth start since mid-October.

Elsewhere, Tyler Adams helped close out a 2-1 Champions League win over Manchester City while DeAndre Yedlin and Galatasaray clinched top spot in its Europa League group after playing out a scoreless draw with Lazio. Lynden Gooch registered two assists as Sunderland rebounded in League One play. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Henry Wingo did not feature in Europa League action, as both of their clubs were eliminated from the competition.
