Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Carter-Vickers, McKennie, and more

Celtic missed an opportunity to move one step closer to Scottish rivals Rangers in the table on Wednesday night, but Cameron Carter-Vickers was flawless for the visitors at St. Mirren.

Carter-Vickers continued his stellar loan spell in Glasgow with another Man of the Match performance in a scoreless draw at The SMISA Stadium. The Tottenham loanee completed 96% of his passes in the draw, while also winning all four of his aerial battles and four of his six individual duels overall. Carter-Vickers helped limit St. Mirren to only two shots on goal in the match and only 17% possession, continuing to show why he has been one of the top arrivals in the Premiership this season.

Celtic has one final match this calendar year against St. Johnstone on Boxing Day before entering a two-week rescheduled winter break due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Scotland

Weston McKennie came off the bench and delivered a strong 45 minutes in Juventus’ 2-0 win over Cagliari. McKennie won the most duels in the match (10) and also completed all five of his dribbles, which was also a match-high. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder helped Juventus claim a fifth victory out of the past six matches, moving to fifth place in the Serie A standings on 34 points.

Tanner Tessmann did not have a great afternoon for Venezia in a 3-1 loss to Lazio, being sent off in second-half stoppage time. Tessmann received a red card for a lounging challenge on Lazio substitute Luis Alberto, forcing referee Fabio Maresca to eject the USMNT midfielder from the match. Venezia’s three match unbeaten run came to an end with the defeat.

Christian Pulisic came off the bench to help Chelsea book its spot in the Carabao Cup semifinals. Pulisic played 45 minutes off of the bench as the Blues defeated London rivals Brentford 2-0 away from home, setting up a semifinal showdown with Tottenham in January. Pulisic failed to register a shot on target, but was lively as Chelsea scored a pair of late goals to spoil the party at the Community Stadium.
