It’s SBI Q&A Time

It has been a long time since we at SBI had a reader Q&A, and that’s a drought we are going to put to an end this week by restarting the popular Q&A series.

SBI Editor-in-Chief Ives Galarcep will be taking your questions today on any soccer (or pop culture) topics you want to discuss. Want to talk USMNT? Have an MLS question? Want to talk music or movies or TV shows? Send us your questions our way and Ives will answer select questions in a post that will drop later this week.

The SBI Q&A will be a regular monthly series and we will also be taking these questions and answering some of them in detail on The SBI Show, as well as in video form.

  1. Ives, Please provide update on the remaining open MLS coaching positions. And what / where will Tab Ramos do next? Too good of a resource to stay unemployed. thanks.

  2. What are the next clubs for Reyna and Aaronson? What’s Aaronson’s ceiling? Which young MLS player (u-20) is the next to make a move to a high-level European club?

  3. Can anything stop bi-annual World Cups from happening? Can anything be done to move FIFA toward becoming what they should be?

  4. New England’s loss last night was shocking to say the least. What do you think happens to the Revs following the missed opportunity? I assume Turner is headed to Europe and we already know Tajon is headed to Belgium…are there any more departures in the near future?

  5. Do you think we will continue to see in form players miss out from camps and potentially the World Cup roster due to how Berhalter wants to play (eg “verticality”)? Or do you think Berhalter will show more personnel/tactical flexibility? Given the need to be better on say set pieces I can’t imagine him not considering bringing in players who offer a more aerial threat.

  7. Hey Ives. My Question is about Coach Bob. Do you think he will play his son as a 6 or as a center back? Also do you think he can turn Jozy around like it was 2010 or 2014? The USMNT could use a inform Jozy at least as a bench option. Also did Bob have anything to say when Zimmerman was traded? Did Bob have any National team interest from other countries? Thanks. AD

  8. Any chance MLS raises its salary cap (and Mex lowers theres) to make a merger more possible? I believe if a merger happens (and a loosening of salary cap) the league will be a top 3 league. As it stands we love to say MLS has surpassed NHL on the American sports landscape, Howver the NHL average salary is $2.69 million and the average MLS average is $410,000. The disaprity is laughable except for the fact that NHL is the top league in its sport and MLS isnt close. But if you raised the cap it might be.

  9. Maybe its me, but it seems like the USMNT has more than its shares of injuries with our better players, more so than Mexico. Reyna (Both), JOB, Onyewu, Pulisic,Holden etc. Dempsey and Landon avoided the injury bug. Do you think its overtraining? tight muscles?

  10. Pop(ish) culture question: I’m watching The Sopranos for the first time, and the pacing seems really really slow to me. Did it not age well, or am I just missing something?

Soccer question: DCU recently announced their end-of-season roster moves. What do you see as their biggest need? Also, will some other MLS team who plays with a 4 man back line snap up Joseph Mora, or is his time in MLS done?

  12. What’s the outlook for strikers like Daryl Dike or Jordan Pefok? They have been performing at pretty high levels, but of course they don’t fit Berhalter’s system so they haven’t gotten the USMNT looks that you’d maybe expect them to. Then, on top of that, there’s serious competition at No. 9 with Pepi, Sargent, Zardes and maybe one or two more. What would Pefok or Dike have to do to get themselves in the picture?

  13. What are your thoughts on using a squad with players from MLS and Latin America for the away Central America games, then a squad of European based players for home, Mex, and Can games?

The MLS and MX guys are more familiar with that concacaf style of play and rough playing surface. Then your European guys are rested, and less likely to get injuries in the games on nice fields.

  14. I was surprised to not see any content on the USL Cup final after Sunday’s match. I had seen some content during playoffs but nothing on the actual result of the final. Just overlooked, prior writer not available?

  15. Hi Ives – With some question still at some positions are there any MLSers that you see making the USMNT for Qatar (assuming we make it)? Matt Polster has been doing it for the Revs. Aaron Herrera has been standout for RSL.

  16. Assuming USMNT qualify for World Cup, what type of friendly schedule do you think they will play next summer? Is there any possibility of a Pre-World Cup exhibition tournament to simulate the competition, conditions and schedule they’ll face in Qatar?

    • I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not but literally the entire industry has been moving in that direction. If you want access to the content, subscribe. If not, then don’t. Newspapers, magazines, and other publications have utilized this model for several years.

  17. Why are people so high on Luca De La Torre? For the life of me I cannot figure this one out. Truthfully, I haven’t watched any of his club games in Holland, but from what I can tell, he wasn’t good enough for Fulham and currently plays for a mid table club in Holland. People act like he’s the second coming of Xavi Hernandez.
