Canadian men’s national team defender Alistair Johnston is heading back to Canada to set up the next stop in his professional career.

Nashville SC traded the right back to CF Montreal on Monday in exchange for $1 million in general allocation money.

The 13th overall pick by Nashville SC in the 2020 draft, Johnston made 44 appearances with the club. He has also become a regular with Canada, earning 18 caps. Johnston could be an addition as wingback or right-sided centerback in CF Montreal coach Wilfired Nancy’s three-man back line.

Nashville SC will retain a 10% sell-on clause which starts at $1 million. Johnston has signed a two-year deal with CF Montreal with options for 2024 and 2025.

Austin FC signs Urruti

Veteran MLS striker Maxi Urruti has joined Austin FC as a free agent.

Urruti signed a two-year deal to join Austin FC. The 30-year-old Argentine has already played for five MLS teams and scored 60 goals in the league. He most recently turned out for the Houston Dynamo, where he scored seven goals and had four assists in the 2021 season.

Urruti joins Moussa Djitte at center forward for Austin. Danny Hoesen spent most of 2021 out injured, but he is set to return to the fold for the upcoming season.

Charlotte FC sign goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina

Charlotte FC has found a goalkeeper as its expansion season approaches.

Croatian goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina has joined Charlotte on a three-year contract. Kahlina, 29, enters the fold for Charlotte after making 36 appearances over a year and a half for Bulgarian club Ludogorets. Ludogorets won the Bulgarian league in the 2020/21 season.

Kahlina joins Pablo Sisniega at goalkeeper on Charlotte’s roster. Charlotte acquired the 26-year-old Sisniega in a trade from LAFC.
