Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Brooks, Pepi, McKennie and more

John Brooks picked a good time to play his best match in months, helping Wolfsburg earn an important result while also giving U.S. men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter something to think about with World Cup qualifying fastly approaching.

Brooks was excellent in the heart of the Wolfsburg defense in a 0-0 draw with Hertha Berlin on Saturday. Brooks followed up a solid showing in Wolfsburg’s loss to Bochum last week with a dominant display to help shut down his former team from Berlin. The USMNT defender registered five tackles and four aerials won to help Wolfsburg earn a valuable point to snap a six-match losing streak in Bundesliga action.

Elsewhere in Germany, Ricardo Pepi made his first Bundesliga start on Sunday and turned in a promising shift in Augsburg’s 1-1 draw with Timothy Chandler and Eintracht Frankfurt. The USMNT striker recorded two shots, and had goal waved off after a teammate was called for a foul in the sequence leading to Pepi’s finish.

In Italy, Weston McKennie continued his outstanding run of form by scoring his second goal of the week to help Juventus post a 2-0 victory over Udinese on Saturday.

In England, Josh Sargent helped Norwich City earn a 2-1 victory over Everton in Premier League action on Saturday, forcing an own-goal to help the Canaries move within a point of escaping the relegation zone.

In England’s League Championship, Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson helped Fulham to a resounding 6-2 throttling of Bristol City on Saturday that helped move the Cottagers into first place. Daryl Dike made his West Bromwich Albion debut, playing the final 31 minutes of a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Queens Park Rangers.

  1. A lot of our lads started and played 90 or close to it. Good to see. Especially for EPB who has seen little of the field till recently in France.
